Hi Dave,

I wrote this about 2 months ago so it may be of interest!  
I am using the 500SL (have been for three days work and have travelled some 1100 km in 2 of the days!) and with the top down (as always) and the spring weather, it is nice working!!

""The SL gearbox (early type) was a 722.5 and oil/filter change was recommended every 60,000km.  The 722.6, 722.9 gearboxes were initially released with information that these gearboxes required no oil changes.  However, Mercedes Benz has since released information that changes are required every 60,000 km.  This may not be well known.  

In addition, the oil used in the later gearboxes is quite expensive and you should use the right oil, otherwise they can become noisy!! (may also cause damage)."

  great news about your transmission. Thank you for sharing your experiences with all of us. Perhaps it will prevent similar problems for others on this list. Did you find out from anyone in your travels just how often the transmission fluid and filter should be changed in the "sealed" SL's? I asked my dealer about it and was told that changing the fluid was unnecessary. 

  I have about 45000 miles on my 1996 SL600 now and can't help but think that the oil and filter should be changed. I have always done it regularly on other MB's that I've owned, but not sure what to think about this "sealed"  thing.
