Dave, just a quick comment on "sealed transmissions". My 1996 SL500 also
has this transmission configuration and, with 84,000 miles on the odometer, I
figured there was no way I was going to take a chance on a transmission
failure just because MB tells me that the transmission never needs new oil and the
service that goes with it. So I took it in to my favorite private Mercedes
Service location and had them do a complete transmission service, new oil even
in the torque converter, new gaskets, filter, etc. I had them show me the
oil that came out and it was brown. Since the service the vehicle feels much
more willing to go when I step on it and I am very happy that I took control
of that situation.
Happy Motoring - George

Hi George,
I couldn't agree more. I have done that exact work on my SL600 too. I bought
the car with 40,000 miles on it and at 50,000 decided that it probably
should be changed, regardless of what MB says. I did it myself, including the
torque converter, and although a little time consuming was very happy I did. Both
the filter and the oil had a red/brown appearance as opposed to the bright
red color. I bought it from the original owner who told me it had never been
done. There are always small bits of debris that come off a new engine or
transmission until they are completely broken in. For anyone with mechanical
ability it is not that hard and will save you a fortune over dealer costs. I
believe the filter and seal were only about $20. (OEM, but not from the dealer).
Cheers,
Dave
