[R129 SL] RE: R129LIST Digest, Vol 23, Issue 2

My experience is that you must dry the soft top for two-three days and
then get it into the compartment.
Place the hardtop and leave it there till the weather is good, say 20
degrees Celsius.
Then remove the hardtop and restore the soft top on place.

I read the instruction manual in the beginning what say that it was best
to open some times the soft top during winter
Period to let the moister out. So I did what the manual say. My car was
stored in a garage and the temperature was about
5 degrees Celsius. Before the soft top was open, I heard a loud bang ,
and the soft top stops with opening.
I get out the car and see that both plastic side windows were damaged
and broken into 2 pieces. The big window had two small cuts on both
sides. I warmed up the windows with a hairdryer before I could get the
soft top back in the storage compartment. In the spring I opened the
soft top again and noticed that the plastic become very hard and
breakable.
I put in al new plastic windows for 350 euro, the new windows were soft
and easy folding. After coming out you can see the linings from the
material is pressing down into the plastic. In the beginning I was
afraid the windows will be broken again. This time because it looks to
me that the thickness was less than original. But that was not the
issue.
With new windows or soft top the plastic is soft enough to bow without
cracking by low temperature. After some years the plastic becomes hard
en yellow. I have seen a lot of these soft tops on other cars, and
always with some small cracks in
The side windows.
So the best is to leave it alone completely during winter season, and if
you don't have a hardtop, leave the soft top always up and stretched.

I recently purchased a 99 sl500 , live in Ohio and am wondering with the

cold winter weather here what would be best for the plastic rear window
of
my soft top while it will be stored this winter in my detached unheated
garage. Im thinking maybe it would be better to keep hard top off and
have
soft top up so the plastic would not be folded up all winter if it were
down. Thanks for any replies.

I've done a couple of things in the past and they both seem to work. The
first is I clean the canvas and the plastic with a cleaner restorer.
Make sure you let the top dry for a few days, just to make sure its
completly dry. I then take a couple of big beach towel and role it so
it's seven-eight inch round. I'll lay it across the plastic window so it
covers the window left to right. I'll lift the top to to point the back
section starts to flip up. I then tuck the towel into the crease (sp) of
the window about the middle has it starts to fold completely into the
compartment I carefully guide the towel into place as the top starts to
close. The towel keeps the plastic somewhat stretched around the towel.
It also helps to have someone help with the top coming down. The other
is I keep the hard top off under a top cover on a rolling rack in the
garage. I keep the canvas top up and I'll lay a couple thick moving
blankets over the body and cover the whole vehicle with a fitted
breathable top. Either way I wont move the top up or down until mid
march early april. Works for me. I'm sure there guys out there that have
a better way.

Usually from the valve cover gaskets, head gaskets, or the front timing
cover leaking oil into the alternator.
