Hi Mark. I'm afraid you might have to bite the bullet on this. I had exactly the same problem on my 1992 300SL24. The MB main dealer replaced fluid and filters and told me the 'lazy' reverse was due to lack of use. Three frustrating months later I had the box rebuilt by an independent auto box specialist in the UK which was recommended by the MB club. Cost me 2000 euros but what a difference! Good luck. Frank
PS you might try adding Lucas Transmission Fix (see their web site) - some people swear by it but it didn't work for me (and anyway I'm not keen on additives)
