[R129 SL] Thicking sound

I believe it are the hydraulic valve aligners, one ore more don't get
enough oil to fasten.
The the clicks begin. With more power the oil pressure go's up and the
clicks dissapaers.
So; the oil is to thick, or you wait to long to change your oil and
filter and there is a small
Piece of dirt into the oil line to the aligners.

Mayby it wil go away now you changed your oil, otherwise you can put a
cleaningtool in your oil.
And if it wil be worse, you must let your mechanic manual clean your
valve aligners.

Good luck from Holland

This is a difficult problem, but I believe that there could be some path
to ground through a frayed cable insulation or a conectror with a
leakage path. Or perhaps a major ground conncetion may have come loose.
Remember that there is a long path from the battery in the trunk to the
engine. I would first wash the engine compartment, staying clear of
everything behind the firewall like the computer. I would do this by
spraying Simple Green on everything and then carefully using a pressure
washer if possible clean everything of. Do not use degreaser stuff like
Gunk or similar. Following that I would dry the engine using compressed
air if you have it or a standard yard blower will work well. Let
everything dry. Then get a spray bottle of Boeshield T-9 that was
developed by Boeing. It penetrates and displaces moisture and acts as a
protectant. Spray it at all the usual suspect cables and connectors. On
any connecor that you can seperate you can additionally use a pspray-on
electr ical contact cleaner like Pure Tronics. The T-9 stuff is not
readily found, but the manufacturer can be reached at 1-800-962-1732. If
the problem does not go away, at least you will have a squeaky clean
engine compartment. Technicians usually appreciate that and try harder.
Sorry I cannot help more, but I certainly would not throw a new computer
or instrument cluster at this problem at this time.

I have a 1997 sl500 with 63000 miles. Several days ago I heard a ticking
sound from the engine area when I started the car. The sound comes and
goes. I have changed oil but this did not help. I only hear it when the
car is in idle for a small time (30 + sec or more). Yesterday I drove
the car about 150 miles total and it was fine when we arrived home.
However today when I went to the drive in at the bank it started again
while the car was standing at idle. I then drove home again and it was
fine? At larger rpms the sound goes away. Any idea what this issue may
be?

Kind regards,

Thor

I would suggest to use full synthetic oil 5/30 and have your oilpump
checked

Does it make the sound just
at a cold start ? What's your
oil PSI showing when it
"ticks" ?

Sounds like a hydraulic lifter not pumping up ,
or a timing chain issue. You can isolate it
with a short length of garden hose. Put
one end to your ear and the other near
the area of the sound , taking care not
to get any clothes tangled in moving
parts.

I've had LOTS of internal engine issues with
my one owner , low miles '95 SL 500.
This car has been on Mobil-1 , changed at
3.5 - 4-K intervals. Dealer serviced & PAMPERED.

I'd have the OIL TUBES checked. It's hard for
me to believe that a car that costs 90-K would
have a PLASTIC tube carry the oil to the top
of the engine , but this one does. ( I believe
these were replaced "quietly" , under warranty
on many cars ).

More : Seems there was a timing chain issue
             with mid-90's 5 liter engines. I believe
this was very year specific. Maybe another
member knows just what years to look
           out for.

The lifters also can be a problem in
the 5 liter motor , even at low miles.

A fairy-tale-wish-come-true is allowing a lot of free track time for me
to play in my future. I know the 600SL was never intended for such, but
c'mon. who can blame me with this car?!?!? My 1st Gear Start Module
just arrived, and I've found instructions & a wiring diagram to install
an ASR defeat switch. Has anyone here done a 600SL exhaust note
modification you're particularly happy with? Were there any manual
transmissions mated to the V12s? Any performance chips (I priced Power
Chips @ $1K EACH!), superchargers, etc you recommend for power upgrades?
