Jan, maybe my hood configuration is different from yours but a while back a 
service tech. showed me how to open the hood beyond what is the normal open 
position.  First, in the normal open position I pull the right side stop pin 
to allow that side to go slightly more open.  Then I go to the left side and 
do the same thing.  Once that is done I lift the hood until it stands 
completely vertical and the detents click in and hold it perfectly vertical 
to allow me to comfortably work at any point on the rear of the engine.  I 
do this inside the garage because I do not want to take the chance that a 
strong wind can come along a ruin my day (and the car)
