Thats wright, i take the hood off when a must repair the windshield
wiper motor.
I was indeed suprised from the junk for the filter.
But be carefull to turn the screws loose. In mine version it has two
long bolts from 8 mm which are screwed in a
Messing ( cupper whith zink) nut. The messing nut being hold in a piece
off plastic at the bottum.
It has been corroded in all the jears and the nut turns round in the
plastic.
I had to force it out to open the box. At the end i used two Metric
bolts 8 mm and put a normal nut under the plastic damaged part and saw a
cut in the upper end of the bolt. So i can screw a nut on the bolt, take
a screwdriver and keep it in the cut, and fasten thenut with a wrench.
It is fixed for one dollar.
But better is to keep it undamaged.

By the way, the wipermotor stops in the middle of the windshield, so i
take off the housing ( 3 screws) from the wipermotor, bend the three
contactlips down so that the contactpoints were aligned with the three
contactrings and after cleaning the contactrings and replace the greese,
everything works fine for 10 months.

After that time the wiper stay's for a second in the middle , and then
go on.
I heard a click in the box on the right side from the car, where a lot
off electronics is settled.
I followed the cable from the wipermotor to the control box ,
disconnected the connector, and take out the control unit.
Ir was full of relay's with big contactpoints. I saw that some points
was burned-in. Tooke a smal piece off very little sandpaper and cleaned
the contactpoints. In the meantime the wiper system works without
problems for three jears.

I have a question;
Does anybody know what kind of refrigerator fluid is used in the airco
from a 500SL 1990 ?
Is it freon?
I repaired my Mazda (1986) airco, and filled it up with R 84 fluid.

For a long time I had that the ABS came on at the last meters I used my
brakes. I cleaned the sensors on both front wheels and it stops for a
few weeks. After that some times it comes and it disappears. Now the ABS
an ASR bulbs becomes to burn.

What's happening: The cables from the sensors to the body, laying direct
on the wheel suspension And every time I made a brake, the car go's with
the front down, and the cable make a small turn. But after 15 jears the
inside cable is broken, and then it makes no contact, so the computer
tells The system that there is no signal from the sensors, and the car
is running. So the system for ASR and ABS cannot works properly and so
for safety it shut down and the bulbs are burning.

Then I asked to the local mechanic what the cable\s will cost for my
129. They told me that it was 100 Euro a piece without taxes. And I
supposed I needed two pieces, because when one is gone the other will
not take a long time to follow. I had it with my back wheel bearings;
the second was damaged within 3 months.

Then I go to the second hand part mechanic. He also told me that the
cables were expensive. When I told him that it was only four wires , two
for the sensors and two for the brake-pad , and that it was the same
cable what is used on an normally 500 S, he looked and say that the
cables for the S were 35 euro.

So I bought two used cables for 30 euros and make a measurement if they
were ok. I replaced the damaged one and discovered that it is easy to
measure with a normal ohm measure equipment. When the sensor is ok, the
value is around the 900 ohms. If the cable is broken , the value is not
measurable or lay's in the Mega ohms.

I replaced the cables, but the part to click in the shock absorber was
missing. I take a little iron saw and make a cut at the end off the ring
from the old cable, and take it slowly off the old cable. So now I could
put it over the new used cable and stuck it in the place where it should
be.

So it works with a lot off money less then the asked!

If you have alignment on your shock absorbers you need a different cable
with three wires more !!! It has two connectors built in and two plugs
for the brake pad sensors.

Greetings from the already two weeks Californian like weather country
Holland. I drive my 129 every day open.

Good going Jan. That's the kind of innovation that makes this 129 group
a
joy to be part of.
Here in North Carolina I keep the top off most of the year.

I am going to change my thermostat in my 1996 SL500 so if anyone has
done it
please let me know the details. Also, I understand there is a filter in
the
cabin air path somewhere below the dash. I tried to find it the other
day
without success. Any help is appreciated.

Hey George
Victor here, the filter is under the hood (bonnet) On top just behind
the top of the motor between the fire-wall and the back of the motor. If
I recall it take three or four screws located on the back side of the
cover, towards the passenger compartment or ass end if you will. Loosen
the screws and the cover hinges forward, towards the front of the car.
Before replacing the filters vacum out the compartment, I was surprised
at all the airborne junk that was in there. Good Luck if you need me to
walk you through it I can email you may phone number off this site.
