I concur with Pat here - I just changed front shock mounts on my 500SL and it made all the difference in the ride and handling.  I also changed the front struts at the same time.  Car feels "new" again.

  Check the rubber shock top mounts under the hood..they crack prematurely and are easy to replace

  My '96 SL600 (I'm a new owner) has a (1) hard ride and (2) hip-hop motion longitudinally like the shocks are not working. The car only has 35K so the shocks are fine; the problem is almost certainly in the air ride feature of the suspension. I had a similar feature on a BMW M6 and it was troublesome. I have ordered the MB CD-ROM for this car but it has not yet arrived. I would like to have some input before I take it to a shop for repair.
