Diane,

I think the posts in regards to not having the back locks tight enough are 
the most likely culprit.  I have had this problem with my home built. My 
camera works fine although some what difficult as everything is friction 
based no gears. In any case I've had the same problem until I started paying 
very close attention when I put the holder in. I also purchased a small wood 
clamp that I can put on the back swing adjustment this help to keep it stiff.
