Hi, Dan- I have wondered about that too. I have a ewe, Sugarpine Belle, that has a gray spot on her rump but no eye circle. She threw a pair of lilac rams last year, and one was a very dark gray, the other more medium. Both of those lambs had the eye circle. This year's lambs are not lilac. This year, I noticed the gray is spreading to other adjacent patches. Belle is only 3, so "gray hair" theories seem a bit premature. I think the gray in question seems like what the dog world describes as dilute black. ??? I had another ewe that faded to brown and had eye circles, but she never threw a lilac. Not sure if that was significant or not.

I sheared yesterday and found a clearly grey patch on an otherwise dark black 2-year old ram. I noticed a different color on him last year when I sheared, but just figured it was a stain or faded spot. (Some of you saw this ram at AGM last year and noticed the spot.) This ram is a proven lilac carrier, but I don't know if the grey is from lilac or something else. (Though I suppose that anything that isn't black is lilac.)
