Hi Lynette,
I just sent 37 pelts off to Buck's County Fur Products in Quakertown, PA and was able to fit them into 7 boxes. I just scrounged the boxes up over the last few months. Our local landfill's recycling center is a good source. If I know the pelts aren't going out right away I'll put them in plastic bags inside the boxes to keep they dry (because here in Oregon once the cool, wet weather hits the dry pelts will start picking up moisture again), but if they're going right out I don't bother with the bags. Because I send so many out at a time and because it's easy to forget what I sent by the time I get them back, I take pictures of the raw pelts and note which pelts were in which box (i.e., box 1 of 7 contained 5 pelts - 3 Jacob and 2 Navajo-Churro). Micro-managing? Sure. But that way I have a record of what I sent and can tell if I got back what I sent. Plus, if a box were to get lost in transit I'd know which pelts were lost.

I've been using DHL (www.dhl.com) for all of my heavier shipping needs for the last year or so. My experience has been that they're substantially cheaper than UPS and they don't charge as many over-size fees as UPS does. You can set up a DHL account on-line and do all of your invoicing and payments there. And best of all they'll give you a 10% discount for doing it all on-line. They mail out free supplies so I'm able to print out shipping labels out on my computer and get them ready at home, then I drop them off in town at a mail box type store. Plus I can track them on-line just like with UPS.

Hi all,

Just thought I'd ask how you all box up your pelts. I have one more wether to butcher before I send in all six pelts, but was just curious if there is any secret to being cost efficient when shipping these clunky things!

Thanks in advance,

Lynette Frick
