I have always been told that if there has ever been horses on your land, or an animal with tetanus, there is tetanus in the soil. It is in the soil for many many years. If you ever lost an animal to tetanus you would not want to take a chance on your animals getting it. They will appear fine one minute and the next their legs are straight and stiff and their eyes bugged out and they cannot stand. It is fatal. Tetanus antitoxin is only good for a few days and can be given to lambs so they don't contract tetanus. Tetanus toxoid, which is in CD-T, is for long term coverage. The first year the animal gets a shot of CD-T and a second shot 21 to 28 days later. Then a shot annually after that. With Tetanus antitoxin there is a slight chance of a reation to the shot so you should have adrenalin on hand in case this happens.

You mention vaccinated for tetanus at one week old. For one thing....why?
I don't think I have heard of doing that in a lamb so young. Some
vaccinate the pregnant ewe, I think it is with CD&T, so the lamb picks it
up from the mother. My vet only vaccinates the young mothers, she believes
the older ewes don't need it anymore. She might be right, I've never had a
problem. Anyway, back to the injection of a lamb at one week. I would ask
around (vets, etc) if that could be a problem. Also, sometimes, the needle
(maybe the contents) can hit or damage a nerve, might be easy to do in a
young lamb. Hopeful someone on this list can answer about vaccinating a
one-week-old lamb. I asked on sheep-l, lots of sheep vets there.
