Hello Mark,

We set up and are moderators for the Shorttailedsheep group on Yahoo. We do not have spam problems and the only thing we do is to vet applications to join. When a person requests to join, there is a message sent asking them to introduce themselves and state their interest. If they don't do that they don't get in. This stops the automated spam attempts to join. There is not much work involved in running the group at all. At the last count there were about 100 members. Not a lot going on there at the moment but we do have flurries of activity. Perhaps the only downside with Yahoo is that it can be a bit of a rigmarole for people joining but the upside is that people can post photos on the group website so that members can choose to view them and you don't get people posting pictures to all the group which can be irritating for those of us who don't have broadband.
It certainly works for us.

All the best,

Gordon & Juliet
Stormy Scotland
