The National ANimal Germplasm Program is beginning a program to identify and
prioritize sheep breeds in the event of a catastrophe. The first step is to
prioritize sheep breeds and the genetic diversity between breeds of sheep. To
determine the genetic diversity between breeds, they are seeking to collect
about 25-50 blood samoles from individual sheep for each breed. They would like
to collect blood from three UNRELATED, registered, animals (represented by a
line or crossed line) per breeder from across the US. You can collect from
rams or ewes.

Information to be provided for each sample would include breeders name,
address, registration number, sire/dam pedigree for 4-5 generations, sex, birth
date, flock size.
All information would be kept confidential within the limits of Federal law
and no individual information would be made public or how their sheep tested.
The information from the sampled sheep would not be at a level suitable for
dtermining parentage. Its purpose is to determine the Jacob breed genetic
distance from other breeds.

If you are interested in letting NAGP collect samples or have questions, you
can contact Carrie Welsh at 970-495-3237 or cwelsh at lamar.colostate.edu. There
is no cost to the Jacob breeder except if you have the blood drawn by an
outside party. They will send the purple top tubes, coolant, and preaddressed
overnight FedEx label, etc.

Again, the blood samples should be from unrelated sheep (say unrelated to
great grandparent) with a four or five generation pedigree. The mDNA analysis
will not determine parentage or purity; it will help determine its relationship
to other breeds.
