I first would like to start out with a public thank you to Betty
Berlenbach. I got my ewes from her and she has been an absolute wonder as I
went through my first lambing, responding patiently and clearly to all my
questions, including the early morning phone call where I was completely
freaking myself out! Thanks Betty!
I have lived through my first lambing season. The one who I could have
sworn was going to single had twins and the one I could have sworn was going
to twin singled, with a ewe lamb who is an Amazon princess. Born on the
morning of day 151, she is huge. I don't have a scale so she may be average
for a single but being a glowing grandma, I have to view her as
extraordinary. I am going to keep the girls, both have lovely fleeces and I
have them mostly for the fiber.
I do have one question about my ram lamb. He is four horned with nice
markings, 4 black feet and 3 of his legs have spots on them. His face
markings are asymmetrical, one cheek patch extends down to his nose, the
other does not. Given that, would folks look at him as breeding stock
(provided the horns grow well), or should I wether him sooner and either
sell him wethered or freezered. I have no qualms about his fate, I just am
trying to get a sense of whether he is desirable. I guess the question is
whether to wether!
