Hello, I've been a lurker to this site for several months. I'm a knitter/handspinner who has become hooked on Jacobs. My husband and I are looking to buy/build a small place in the country. We live in the rural Fingerlakes region of NY-primarily dairy farms (and former farms, many grown over with scrub/trees). We would like to have a small hobby/handspinners flock. I would appreciate any comments, etc on minimum acreage (I'm talking 2-3 or so sheep), type of pasture, etc. I've read the getting started section of Swallow Lane Farms re fencing, etc (looks like Jacobs are hard to keep in !). We've been driving the hills around our little village, looking at former farms(mainly dairy and/or horse), and land parcels, but are clueless on actual land requirements(which I know can vary depending on what's growing, I'm just looking for a general idea, experiences others have had). Have done some reading about shelter, and would also appreciate comments on various options (pole barns, etc). I would be grateful for any 'lessons learned' on owning Jacobs. Since we will be starting from scratch, we'd like to try to get it close to right the first time! Money is also not plentiful, so the less wasted the better. Thanks, Trish Barrows
