Donna, a goat's instinct is to run from a threat, humans are not seen as a 
threat if the goats are used to them.  The same goes for a ram,  the instinct 
is to run, not fight.  There are exceptions as always,  in nature, but I 
wouldn't count on them to protect a flock.  With horses the same applies, 
some are natural protectors and some are trouble in a mixed pasture.  I 
believe that a single, gentle mare is more likely to bond to and protect a 
flock than a gelding.   Robin Casasanto
