A five year plan is basically what I had in mind. We are buying three acres
near the National Forset in the north part of Central Florida. I had been
concerned about fiber animals here in Florida as well, but Texas has as bad
summers as we do.(Mrs. Horak pointed that out to me!) Also there is a woman
who breeds Merino sheep, Aplacas, and Angora goats in northern Georgia.
People told her it would never work, because they dont get that cold weather
there either. She has won blue ribbons at fiber shows with her fiber. She
has been breeding in that area for 15 years.
Probably the main reason there are not more sheep or other fiber animals is
the lack of hard freezes that would kill the parasites as has been
mentioned, and the attitude that fiber animals have to have cold to produce
thick coats. My aussies produce beautiful thick coats in winter and hold
them till spring! I could spin what they shed!LOL
As to the one negative response, well that is another reason there are no
sheep here. People say "why bother?" I am bothering, because I know I can
make it work. I am looking for answers and gleening information from those
who went before me. I am not looking for a get rich quick scheme.
Being someone who likes to try the "impossible" just to prove to others that
it can be done. I know making a flock break even can be done. It has been
done, it will be done in my case as well.
Now with that said, what book should I be looking at purchasing for doing my
own doctoring? I have worked in the kennels and assisting the vet. techs in
a specialist clinic for over a year. I am hoping that experience will be
helpful to me. I could probably even do my own stitching if I needed to! :0)
Thanks for all the great information! I know this is going to be a long
tedious process, but I am hoping the thrill of lambing and selling my own
finished wool products will more than make up for the hard work, and time
and money spent!
You all are a great bunch of people! Thanks!

Lisa P.
