**** Transitioning From iMovie '11 To Final Cut Pro X ****
<http://www.macworld.com/article/1168045/transitioning_from_imovie_11_to_final_cut_pro_x.html#lsrc.rss_main>
Mark Spencer, Macworld

> On the surface, the new Final Cut Pro looks and acts much like iMovie. Underneath, however, is a powerful, professional editing application with a deep feature set—which is why it costs $300. It can import iMovie projects, so you can take a project you started in iMovie and open it in Final Cut Pro. There, you can take advantage of a greater variety of adjustable titles, transitions, and effects; faster, easier editing with keyboard shortcuts; more-powerful color-correction and audio tools; advanced green-screen keying; multilayer compositing; multicamera editing; and a universe of third-party plug-ins.

Max Tatton-Brown, Wired.co.uk

> Crowdfunding platforms like Kickstarter have been a powerful force in connecting innovative and risky new ideas with the backing that traditional sources of capital may not have been willing to offer. But there's a second front to this battle, promising the rejuvenation of franchises that awaken longing pangs of nostalgia among the faithful.

S Ramesh, Channel NewsAsia

> Organisations which have personal data like one's name, identity card number and even photograph, would have to think twice before passing on the information to others, once the Personal Data Protection Bill is passed.

> The law will regulate the collection, use and disclosure of personal data by organisations as it will spell out that such agencies have to safeguard the personal data they possess.

> Seems to me that the list of members of the committee is a fact, and Mr Heng himself should do the clarification in the mainstream media where he was reported saying those strange words.

> Second, we’re not just hearing from Mr Heng but the PM as well on how the national conversation is not about culling sacred cows. Seems a climb down from what Mr Heng had said earlier.

**** Question No. 666 For Oral Answer ****
<http://app.mica.gov.sg/Default.aspx?tabid=231>
Ministry Of Information, Communications And The Arts, Singapore Government

> The last edition in 2011 cost the National Arts Council (NAC) $850,000, to showcase one artist and one curator. As a comparison, the grants budget for the whole visual arts sector in FY11 was only $1.78 million, but benefitted more than 135 artists and visual arts groups.

> As I had mentioned in my written reply to Members in July this year, the Venice Biennale has been one of the platforms at which the NAC has profiled Singapore’s artistic talent globally. However, despite the millions of dollars spent on the Venice Biennale, only a handful of our artists and curators have been able to capitalise on the opportunities and prestige that their participation have brought. For the vast majority of our artists, there is still much room to improve the basic level of support.

Han Fook Kwang, Straits Times

<http://temasektimes.wordpress.com/2012/09/10/sim-ann-should-stop-politicking-and-review-policies-prejudiced-against-native-singaporeans/>
Tan T H, The Temasek Times

> Above all, it raises the question of choice and responsibility. The Prime Minister and then Director of the National Population Secretariat, Ms Sim chose to open the floodgate to the foreigners at a rate unprecedented in history of independent nations, therefore they are entitled to both credit and responsibility for the policy consequence of their social engineering project.

> To try and cast it as a moral test of Singaporeans’ characters signify a shrinking of responsibility, an unwillingness of the Government to accept the negative consequence cause by their decision. Instead, the onus is now on Singaporeans to live up to the moral standards set fore by Ms Sim so that we can enable her population polices to work.

Since SMC told the press it is looking into the case, we have yet to find out if it too will join in the sorry stonewalling saga. For all we know, Health Minister Gan Kim Yong, who was copied in the whistle blower email, might even go to bat for the doctor. A precedent has been set.

Emergent Econmics

> Of course most people would rather be a poor Singaporean than a poor Bangladeshi, but relative poverty matters. It’s morally unacceptable to say that someone from the subcontinent should be grateful for his windowless shipping-container abode because he’s getting $2 per hour instead of a dollar. People measure their well being against what they see around them, and $2 in Singapore probably isn’t, subjectively, worth as much as a dollar in Dakha.

> No I’m not traumatised at all, but perhaps the next generation of Singaporeans would, when they realise that while their peers have become instant millionaires overnight from selling the million-dollar flat they inherited from their parents to snap up condos or landed property, they’re struggling to cope with the mortgage for their 2-room broom closet, which could very well cost as much as a 4-room in Ang Mo Kio today.

**** A Constructive Reply To Mr Wong Meng Meng ****

We Believe In Second Chances

> While the government recently announced plans to amend the mandatory death penalty for drug offenses and murder, we would go on to argue that an accused person’s due process rights are still infringed under the general criminal justice system. For example, under the Misuse of Drugs Act, a person found in possession of a certain amount of drugs is presumed to be trafficking in the substance. The prosecution does not have to prove that the accused is guilty beyond reasonable doubt. Rather, the burden rests on the accused to establish his innocence. To make matters worse, accused persons also do not have an effective right to legal advice at the time of their arrest, uncorroborated confessions can be used to convict the accused and interrogations are not recorded on video.
