**** The Magicians Is Harry Potter For Grown-ups <http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2011/sep/16/magician-king-harry-potter-grown-ups?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+theguardian%2Fbooks%2Frss+%28Books%29>
Damien Walter, The Guardian

If you could journey to any fantasy world, which would it be? I, like many millions of others, would have to choose JRR Tolkien's Middle Earth – although, given the option, I'd divide my time between Gondor and Rivendell, and skip the guided tours of Moria and Mordor. Lev Grossman, author of The Magicians and its sequel, The Magician King, might well choose that other classic of British fantasy literature, the Narnia of CS Lewis. But without doubt, the Milllenials out there who grew up with the works of JK Rowling are at this moment gleefully shouting: HOGWARTS! HOGWARTS! HOGWARTS!

**** Malaysia To Abolish ISA <http://singaporemind.blogspot.com/2011/09/malaysia-to-abolish-isa.html>
Diary Of A Singapore Mind

In Singapore, the ISA has a history of being used against legitimate political alternativies, in particular, socialists who were trying to bring about a more equal society. Today these archaic laws are part of the climate of fear that persists in Singapoream society.

**** SDP Calls For Meeting With Elections Department <http://www.yoursdp.org/index.php/news/singapore/4960-sdp-calls-for-meeting-with-elections-department>

"We would like to be included in the review process so that we can be assured that the inconsistencies are not repeated. I hope you can appreciate our concern that such inconsistencies could affect the outcome of the polls. Every effort must, therefore, be taken to ensure that they are resolved. This includes involving opposition parties as you go about reviewing the election procedures."

**** ISA – The Irrelevant Law? <http://theonlinecitizen.com/2011/09/isa-the-irrelevant-law/>
Ravi Philemon, The Online Citizen

Has the ISA of Singapore passed the point of being relevant? Should the government of Singapore consider repealing the ISA and replace it with other more fitting laws in keeping with the times? Especially new laws that would shift the power of detentions from the executive to the judiciary?

**** Malaysia Abolishes The ISA And Eyes On Singapore <http://chemgen.wordpress.com/2011/09/16/malaysia-abolishes-the-isa-and-eyes-on-singapore/>

There should be tough laws with preventive detention, closed door trials etc that are palatable to the public. The balance is hard to achieve but the path to it is reforming, not removing, the ISA.

Singapore blocks a symbolic list of 100 mostly pornographic sites but does not to bar any site for political content. And despite strict controls on open political discussion, it allowed freewheeling criticism of government policies in the run-up to general elections this year.

Across much of Asia, the feeling is growing that imposing any sort of controls on online political debate backfires.

**** Ministry Of Home Affairs Press Statement On The ISA <http://www.todayonline.com/Singapore/EDC110916-0001082/Ministry-of-Home-Affairs-press-statement-on-the-ISA>
Today

The ISA in Singapore has only been used to deal with threats of subversion, racial and religious extremism (such as inciting racial or religious hatred, strife and violence), espionage and terrorism. These threats continue to be salient today, especially in the last ten years against the threat of terrorism, where the government's priority is to act swiftly to prevent an attack from taking place. The arrests made under the ISA in Dec 2001 thwarted the imminent suicide bombings against establishments in Singapore that were planned by Al-Qaeda operatives assisted by several of the arrested Jemaah Islamiyah members, preventing the loss of innocent lives. The ISA continues to be relevant and crucial as a measure of last resort for the preservation of our national security.

**** Workers’ Party Position On The Internal Security Act <http://wp.sg/2011/09/1902/>
The Workers' Party

Nevertheless, the Party acknowledges the need for effective measures against terrorism. As such, our manifesto also stated that the government should be enabled by a dedicated anti-terrorism law to make swift arrests and detain suspects without trial. However, these suspects must be afforded real avenues to challenge the legality of their arrests through the courts and an advisory board. These bodies should be empowered to order the person’s release if not satisfied as to the legality of the detention.
