**** How To Procure An iPad 2 <http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/03/18/how-to-procure-an-ipad-2/?partner=rss&emc=rss>
Nick Bilton, New York Times

At first glance it might seem that you’re completely out of luck. Apple’s Web site says the wait for a new iPad 2 is four to five weeks, up from just three to four weeks on Monday. Going to an Apple store likely won’t work either as most retail outlets are completely out of inventory.

But, there are solutions.

**** Why Apple Succeeds: Users, Not Designers, Have The Best Ideas <http://www.theatlantic.com/life/archive/2011/03/why-apple-succeeds-users-not-designers-have-the-best-ideas/72660/>
Adam Silver, The Atlantic

Apple has recognized what many in the tech industry are still learning: that users are truly at the center of their business. It relies upon millions of hobbyists, developers, and hackers to transform its products from good to great by selling cool and useful apps in the App Store. Think about it: what would the iPad be without Flipboard and that fantastic Twitter app? What would the iPhone be without Pandora and Angry Birds? In essence, Apple is allowing other people to determine the ultimate fate of its products.

Andrew Harrison, Macworld UK

iNet Pro is a relatively simple app to operate and browse, and a very powerful way to gain fast and precise overviews of what’s on your network, and what service and port are available.

Thanks in large part to the application selection, the iPad is a very useful tool and also an amazingly fun and friendly device for people to use.

**** Rereading: The Rainbow By DH Lawrence <http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2011/mar/19/rainbow-lawrence-rachel-cusk-rereading?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+theguardian%2Fbooks%2Frss+%28Books%29>
Rachel Cusk, The Guardian

Not least physically: to read Lawrence is to read with the body as well as the mind. For this he will always be treated with suspicion, with caution, as long as the formation of the human personality is based around the denial or misrepresentation of the body's wants. But Lawrence possessed the bitter knowledge born of his own experience: that originality and truth will always meet with rejection by the common mind.

**** Why Last Chapters Disappoint <http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/20/books/review/why-last-chapters-disappoint-essay.html?_r=1&partner=rss&emc=rss>
David Greenberg, New York Times

Lippmann’s experience will be familiar to almost anyone who has written a book aspiring to analyze a social or political problem. Practically every example of that genre, no matter how shrewd or rich its survey of the question at hand, finishes with an obligatory prescription that is utopian, banal, unhelpful or out of tune with the rest of the book. When it comes to social criticism, no one, it seems, has an exit strategy.

**** From The Paris Review To A Korean Deli <http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/20/books/review/book-review-my-korean-deli-by-ben-ryder-howe.html?partner=rss&emc=rss>
Corby Kummer, New York Times

It’s hard not to fall in love with “My Korean Deli.” First, it’s the (very) rare memoir that places careful, loving attention squarely on other people rather than the author. Second, it tells a rollicking, made-for-the-movies story in a wonderfully funny deadpan style. By the end, you’ll feel that you know the author and his family quite well — even though you may not be eager to move in with them.

**** A Comparative Analysis Of Real CPF Returns And Other Provident Funds <http://furrybrowndog.wordpress.com/2011/03/19/a-comparative-analysis-of-real-cpf-returns-and-other-provident-funds/>
Furry Brown Dog

In the years to come, it is foreseen that the rise of China and India in today’s globalised world would mean a faster pace of development which often brings with it higher inflation. If you thought that the first decade of the millenia was bad enough, subsequent ones are likely to be more inflationary. Leading liberal economist Krugman explains this point best in a post when he says that the sharp divergence of economic fortunes between advanced Western economies and developing economies mean most of the world inflation is disproportionately concentrated in developing countries which are reluctant to allow their currencies to rise for fear of jeopardizing economic growth. While Singapore clearly no say in the conduct of monetary policy of much larger foreign economies, its government has every means and tools at their legislative disposal to help its retired and retiring folk tide through a likely period of high inflation in the years to come. The only question is whether such efforts will go beyond half-hearted one-time electioneering budget handouts.

**** Singapore Is Not A Model For Australia <http://www.lowyinterpreter.org/post/2011/03/17/Singapore-is-not-a-model-for-Australia.aspx>
Michael Barr, The Interpreter

Pearson argues that Singapore has developed without the creation of an underclass and that the country has 'free(d) itself from poverty'. In fact Singapore has two underclasses. The first consists of poor Singaporeans who live in a high-cost city, but who work without significant political or industrial protections: without a minimum wage, without independent unions, without much by way of welfare or health benefits and without much hope of themselves or their children ever climbing out of the poverty trap.

The second underclass is comprised of 'foreign guest workers' who come from other parts of Asia and work for even less than the locals. They make up nearly 40% of the island's population and they have the added vulnerability that they can be repatriated in an economic downturn or if they get sick, pregnant, or make trouble.

Seah Chiang Nee, The Star

It had been one crisis after another for Singapore, from the 9/11 terrorist attacks on America in 2001 to the 2007 global financial crisis and recession and now the Middle East upheavals. All these have wreaked various degrees of damage on Singapore’s ambitious overseas investments.

The sanguine environment which existed before, favouring smooth foreign profits, may no longer be around.

The result, said political analysts, will be more robust and liberal campaigning, as had been expected when the Parliamentary Elections Act was amended last year.

**** Stop The PAP Before It's Too Late <http://www.yoursdp.org/index.php/news/singapore/4518-stop-the-pap-before-its-too-late>
Jaslyn Go, Singapore Democratic Party

The PAP does all this with one and only one objective: To raise the GDP at all cost which is the only way it can legitimise its autocratic rule. Let's not forget the raising the GDP directly raises the ministers' salaries. But increasing the GDP doesn't mean making Singaporeans richer.

There are consequences if we continue to let the PAP rule Singapore unchecked and these consequences will be horrendous for the nation. We must stop the PAP before it's too late.

**** Give Me Liberty, Or Give Me Money <http://theowlcritic.blogspot.com/2011/03/give-me-liberty-or-give-me-money.html>
The Owl

The PAP wants voters to believe that without them, Singapore's success would vanish overnight. If this is true, then the hard work and sacrifices of Singaporeans over the last 50 years, are for nothing. Because they have only been able to build a house of cards.

The PAP, is of course, misleading the electorate. Their purpose is to perpetuate their own power, for the next five years, and beyond. And with that power they will be able to do, as they have, for the past 50 years, whatever they please.

**** Where Will Chiam Contest? <http://theonlinecitizen.com/2011/03/where-will-chiam-contest/>
Ng E-Jay, The Online Citizen

The million-dollar question that remains however is whether Chiam will join Jeyaretnam in West Coast, or whether Jeyaretnam will join Chiam in Bishan Toa-Payoh. It is conceivable that pride and ego is at stake here. The opposition leader who abandons his original plans and joins the other in the latter’s preferred constituency might be deemed as acknowledging that the other chap is politically stronger.

I am sure I’m not the only person in Singapore to believe that no judge relishes the burden of having to decide on the constitutionality of Section 377A when it is such a political hot potato. This latest court decision does not shake my belief.
