**** Firefox 5 <http://www.macworld.com/article/161014/2011/07/firefox5.html#lsrc.rss_main>
Nathan Alderman, Macworld

If you prize JavaScript performance above all else, you may not find a faster Mac browser than this. Just don’t go into Firefox 5 (or, in all likelihood, at least some of the program’s future versions) expecting the same dramatic improvements the last version enjoyed.

**** Mozilla Slates Firefox 5 Update To Fix Lion Crash Bug <http://www.macworld.com/article/161030/2011/07/firefox_mac_lion.html#lsrc.rss_main>
Gregg Keizer, Computerworld

According to Mozilla, Mac OS X 10.7, aka Lion, contains a bug that causes Firefox 5 to crash when displaying websites that use downloadable fonts.

**** W3C Wants To Invalidate Apple’s Widget Patents <http://allthingsd.com/20110711/w3c-apple-widget-patent/>
John Paczkowski, All Things D

The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) is taking Apple to the mat over its refusal to allow some of its intellectual property to be included in the W3C’s widget standard.

Over the weekend the group issued a call for prior art invalidating two Apple patents — #7,743,336, which describes a widget security system and application # 20070101146 which covers “safe distribution and use of content.”

**** Get Lion's New Scrolling In Snow Leopard Today <http://www.macworld.com/article/161033/2011/07/lion_scrolling_scroll_reverser.html#lsrc.rss_main>
Dan Frakes, Macworld

Scroll Reverser is a simple utility that, when running, places a new menu in your menu bar that lets you choose your scroll behavior. Choose Reverse Scrolling, and your Snow Leopard will act like a Lion—at least as far as scroll direction goes. The utility even reverses horizontal scrolling—drag two fingers across your trackpad to the left, and onscreen content moves to the left, as well.

**** Tags 2.0.2 <http://www.macworld.com/article/160568/2011/07/tags2.html#lsrc.rss_main>
Brendan Wilhide, Macworld

Tags is a must-have application for anyone seeking flexibility for searching files on a Mac. Tags’ integration with Spotlight and Finder works so well that you’ll likely forget that Tags is a separate application until you actually tag individual files. Tagging files may be somewhat tedious, but finding files is easier with Tags.

**** Review: Compressor 4 <http://www.macworld.com/article/161002/2011/07/compressor4.html#lsrc.rss_main>
Gary Adcock, Macworld

As an upgrade in and of itself, it's somewhat better than average, though not stellar. That said, it facilitates direct access within FCP X to the power of Compressor’s rendering engine along with advanced customization capabilities that are fully accessible in both applications.

**** iMovie ’11 Update Imports iMovie For iOS Projects <http://tidbits.com/article/12312?rss>
Jeff Carlson, TidBITS

Today’s release of iMovie 9.0.4 brings the capability to import projects created in the iOS app into the Mac app. That means you can start a project on your iOS device (when the video or your ideas are still fresh, or you just need to kill some time) and bring it into iMovie ’11 for finishing.

**** Sons Of Rosemary’s Baby: Birth Of The New Horror <http://www.nytimes.com/2011/07/11/books/shock-value-by-jason-zinoman-review.html?_r=1&partner=rss&emc=rss>
Ty Burr, New York Times

Where “Shock Value” excels is in its primary research, the stories of how the seminal shockers of this era came to be, told in large part by the men (and here and there a woman) who made them.

**** "Shock Value": The Golden Age Of Horror Movies <http://www.salon.com/books/laura_miller/2011/07/10/shock_value/index.html>
Laura Miller, Salon

The distinguishing trait of good book on the movies is that the parts you do agree with make you care enough to want to debate the author until late into the night about the parts you don't agree with. Preferably over endless cups of diner coffee, or better yet, bottles of beer, a stack of DVDs at your elbow and the remote in your hand.

**** Murdoch: The Network Defeats The Hierarchy <http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-14093772>
Paul Mason, BBC

The primary function of these journalistic centres of power is to dispense approval or disapproval to politicians. A News International journalist is reported to have said to Labour leader Ed Miliband: "You've made it personal with Rebekah so we're going to make it personal with you."

That is the kind of power that, until about 1500 on Thursday, journalists in that circle could wield.

Freeman Dyson, The New York Review Of Books

In the end, Feynman’s greatest contribution to science was not any particular discovery. His contribution was the creation of a new way of thinking that enabled a great multitude of students and collea gues, including me, to make their own discoveries.

In all likelihood, they are probably preferred over Singaporeans due to lower pay. Furthermore, being foreigners, they are unlikely to demand much from SIA and will have lower bargaining rights.

Thoughts Of A Cynical Investor

Newbie PAP MP Vikram Nair was quoted as saying,”Don’t focus too much on the 40 percent that didn’t vote for you. We have to remember and keep in mind the interests of the 60 percent that did.”

Gee, and his boss, the PM told us that he (the PM) listens to us 40-percenters. Not only did he say that, but at least three ministers are walking the PM’s talk.

**** Reports Give Inaccurate Impression <http://www.straitstimes.com/STForum/Story/STIStory_689319.html>
Aedit Abdullah, Chief Prosecutor For The Attorney-General, Straits Times

The High Court did convict Ismil of murder. But before the Court of Appeal, the prosecution had reviewed the position and informed the court that it was dropping the murder charge.

Instead, the prosecution pursued against Ismil a charge of committing robbery with hurt, while maintaining the murder charge against his brother, Muhammad.

It is, therefore, highly misleading to give the impression that Ismil was cleared by the Court of Appeal of a charge of murder, and that Ismil was still facing the death penalty.

Based on my layman's understanding, it seems accurate to me to say that Ismil was convicted of murder and was facing the death penalty.

**** “居者有其屋”抑或“居者有其债”? <http://www.zaobao.com.sg/yl/yl110711_006.shtml>

Listen, dummy: Ismil was convicted of murder. His lawyer appealled. Else he would have been hanged. Did you file for the appeal? You expect us to believe the high and mighty prosecutor, meaning you, will act on his behalf after stumbling across your own boo-boo?

Singapore Democratic Party

So we have a situation where the Government is the debtor and we the people are, collectively, the creditor. With a twist, of course. A big one. In our case, instead of the lender setting the terms on when and how the debt will be repaid, in this case it is the borrower who decides the terms. And to add insult, the debtor keeps changing the terms of repayment.

This is especially so after the recent swap of the Tanjong Pagar railway station land with Singapore.

HwangDBS Vickers Research, in its research note today, said the breakthrough agreement was reached as there is a need to improve co-operation on national security and growth sustainability as both are faced with increased competition and threats from terrorism.

Both cited cost pressures despite increased efforts to lower costs and increase productivity. SMRT is asking for the maximum fare adjustment of 2.8 per cent.

SBS Transit said more details of the application, which is subject to the approval of the PTC, will be announced at a later date.

**** Affluent S’pore Residents Verbally Abused Govt Staff? <http://sg.news.yahoo.com/blogs/singaporescene/affluent-pore-residents-verbally-abused-govt-staff-040055813.html>
Yahoo!

The MP for Moulmein-Kallang GRC wrote in a Facebook status update on Thursday that these residents used vulgarities to scold the civil servants, who felt discouraged after the incident.

Some who reacted to her Facebook post were sympathetic to the staff who experienced such behaviour from well-educated Singaporeans, with one saying, "We are a civilised society and this is uncalled for."

Others have described such behaviour as part of a "vicious cycle" where "difficult" civil servants abuse their authority and consequently residents treat them poorly. The situation is then worsened when these civil servants react badly to such treatment.

**** ‘Next Five Years Is Crucial For Singapore Politics’ <http://sg.news.yahoo.com/blogs/singaporescene/next-five-years-crucial-singapore-politics-021809388.html>
Andrew Loh, Yahoo!

Clearly, Singapore is at a crossroads. The first substantive indication of where it is headed politically perhaps will depend on how the nine opposition MPs (six elected and three NCMPs) perform in Parliament, and what further changes PM Lee embarks on.

In the meantime, a new generation of young voters and young politicians are knocking on the door, demanding new ways of engagement, and wanting to be more involved in policy decisions, along with expectations of more transparency and accountability in government dealings.

Syafiq, Madness Is Just A Word

What impresses me the most, for them, mosques are more than a place for you to pray five times a day. For them, it is a community centre, where it is not limited to praying only. They have programmes where they engage the community and the youths in liking the mosques. They worked for it as they know that if they do not work for it, then no one else will. In the midst of that monetary hardships, they persevered and did not whine hoping for assistance from the government. Of course, as the minorities, they had to compromise such as they cant use the loudspeakers for azan but they did not see that as a problem as everyone knows that they can still listen to the azan in the radio. These are the examples where you have to persevere and not let the problems to get you down.
