**** Six Unexpected Uses For The Tab Key <http://www.macworld.com/article/160792/2011/07/tab_tricks.html#lsrc.rss_main>
Sharon Zardetto, Macworld

Pity the unassuming workhorse of the keyboard: the Tab key. Even the Shift key gets more respect. But just because it’s unpretentious, you shouldn’t assume it does nothing more than adjust indents in a word processor: the Tab key has a few tricks up its metaphorical sleeve. These tricks all work in Snow Leopard and may work in Lion too, unless otherwise noted.

**** The iCade Review: Your iPad As An Arcade Machine <http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2011/07/the-icade-review-your-ipad-as-a-100-arcade-machine.ars?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=rss>
Ben Kuchera, Ars Technica

This is an attractive, capable piece of hardware that does exactly what you want it to do: it makes you feel like you're playing on a slightly smaller than average arcade machine. For $100 this is certainly a niche product, but it's also worth the money you're paying for it, and will look great in your office or home. Let's just hope the developers use the tools available and add more supported games.

**** Weblock 1.8.1 <http://www.macworld.com/article/160522/2011/07/weblock1.html#lsrc.rss_main>
Derik DeLong, Macworld

Weblock unlocks your ability to restrict access to files shared on Mac OS X’s built-in Apache server. This allows you to put an authentication dialog on any directory being shared through your Web server or filter based on IP address. This can be enabled by editing some configuration files, but Weblock adds a nice GUI that makes the task quick, easy, and error free.

**** Control iTunes From The Command Line With ViTunes <http://www.macworld.com/article/160936/2011/07/vitunes.html#lsrc.rss_main>
Dan Moren, Macworld

If you long for the days when your software was controlled only by words typed to your computer, or if you’re the kind of person who insists that the only true way to view the Web is through lynx, then Daniel Choi’s free ViTunes may be just what the sysadmin ordered.

**** Scant Dishing From A Print Pooh-bah <http://forward.com/articles/139256/>
Mark Oppenheimer, Forward

There is something poignant in reading a collection like this, one that comprises mainly long, discursive reviews of long, intelligent books about long-dead people. Our author is a notable man of letters, the former editor in chief of both Simon & Schuster and The New Yorker. The pieces, whose subjects include Bruno Bettelheim and Isadora Duncan, Harry Houdini and Katharine Hepburn, originally appeared in esteemed journals like The New York Review of Books. Ten years hence, will there be such men? Will there be such journals?

**** Dr Tony Tan Vs Dr Tan Cheng Bock – Battle Of The PAP Elite Vs The PAP Grassroots <http://singstatistician.blogspot.com/2011/07/dr-tony-tan-vs-dr-tan-cheng-bock-battle.html>
Thoughts Of A Singapore Statistician

After GE 2011, the PAP Elite blamed the PAP Grassroots for the poor GE 2016 results. Many PAP Elite felt the PAP Grassroots did not give them “accurate” feedback on ground conditions. Things got so bad that PM Lee Hsien Loong had to come out and appease the PAP Grassroots by saying it was the PAP Ministers and PAP MPs who “misinterpreted” the feedback.

This Presidential Elections therefore sees the PAP Grassroots in an angry mood and out to teach the PAP Elite a lesson. Although the President is supposed to be independent, Dr Tony Tan is the de-facto PAP candidate that the PAP Elite hopes will win the Presidential elections. The expectation is that PAP Grassroots will fall in line and everyone will automatically vote for Dr Tony Tan.

**** Engage Youths Rather Than Lecture Them <http://www.yoursdp.org/index.php/news/singapore/4887-engage-youths-rather-than-lecture-them>
Singapore Democratic Party

It is disheartening that younger Ministers like Mr Chan Chun Sing have not briought in any new thinking into the Government but is instead continuing the old ways of talking down to the people.

On the other hand it is encouraging to note that Singaporeans, like those attending Mr Chan's dialogue, are increasingly concerned about the lack civil liberties in this country. They know that without these liberties, we cannot safeguard anything in this country- including our reserves.

Ashley Gardiner, Herald Sun

The employee said crew were angry that Tiger had made public statements that its staff were being paid while the airline is grounded.

"They're talking about management and pilots," the employee said.

"Eighty per cent of cabin crew are casual. The reality is the staff aren't being looked after."

**** Homes For The Homeless <http://singaporedesk.blogspot.com/2011/07/homes-for-homeless.html>
Singapore Notes

It looks like MCYS has a lot to do. It also looks like the former minister in charge had his priorities misplaced somewhere, providing lush accommodation for foreign athletes while denying a basic roof for Singapore's destitute.

**** Ms Tin In The News <i>Again</i> <http://speakspokewritewrote.wordpress.com/2011/07/05/ms-tin-in-the-news-again/>
SpeakSpokeWriteWrote

If Ms Tin and the powers that be are really interested in changing attitudes towards her, one thing has to be addressed.-the outcome of the Cooling Day controversy. Unless there is a satisfactory conclusion, nothing will appease, no matter how hard Ms Tin tries. After that, Ms Tin should quietly serve her constituency, and let the results speak for themselves.

**** A Shining Example Of How Politicians Should Be <http://thesatayclub.net/2011/07/a-shining-example-of-how-politicians-should-be/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=a-shining-example-of-how-politicians-should-be>
Nigel Tan, The Satay Club

Now that the salaries of ministers and public office holders are currently under review, Mr Gerard Ee and his committee would do well to consider the example of Mr Chen when evaluating the logic used by PM Lee and his father on how difficult it is to get good people to enter public service. Using money as the main carrot isn’t going to solve the problem; it is only going to make the problem worse because the wrong sort of signals are being sent, and the wrong sort of people are going to be lured.

**** Nathan Campaigns For Pro-establishment President <http://maverickbuzz.blogspot.com/2011/07/nathan-campaigns-for-pro-establishment.html>
Maverick's Slice Of Life

After 12 years of a largely silent and compliant presidency, I believe that Singaporeans are looking forward to a change, to having a president who is not cut from the same cookie cutter as the government’s core leadership, to having a president who would take the time to listen to and consider the people’s views, and after having aggregated and assimilated those views, articulate them to the government within the larger context of the governance of Singapore and within the limits of his prescribed authority.

**** Is There Room For Respect? <http://andrewlohhp.wordpress.com/2011/07/05/is-there-room-for-respect/>
Andrew Loh

Disagreeing with someone, even vehemently, does not mean one is free to resort to whatever kinds of speech or behaviour. On the contrary, and if you truly believe in democracy, one should instead accord respect to those who were elected – and in this way, one also respect those who elected these people.

**** The Unbearable Yoke Of The Cornerstone Called Family <http://theonlinecitizen.com/2011/07/the-unbearable-yoke-of-the-cornerstone-called-family/>
Ravi Philemon, The Online Citizen

The case of Muhamad irfan is a sterling example of the government’s unwillingness to devote more resources into family and child welfare. If only the State had not just assumed that some relative would pick-up the children. Since both parents are incarcerated, why weren’t the brothers placed under official care and supervision?

Was a five-year-old sacrificed to our fear of breeding a culture of entitlement?
