**** How Long Will Lion Take To Download? <http://tidbits.com/article/12301?rss>
Michael E. Cohen, TidBITS

How long will you have to wait as the rough beast slouches its way onto your hard disk? It’s not hard to come up with a reasonable estimate.

**** Apple’s Labor Costs Should Be Higher <http://rc3.org/2011/07/05/apples-labor-costs-should-be-higher/>
Rafe Colburn, rc3.org

Apple’s margins aren’t low — I’d like to see them do even more in terms of helping out the people who assemble the gadgets we all love so well.

**** Review: Keyboard Maestro 5 <http://brooksreview.net/2011/07/km-5/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed:%20TheBrooksReview%20(The%20Brooks%20Review)>
Ben Brooks, The Brooks Review

The way I like to think about Keyboard Maestro is that it is a way for me to master my workflow — to command it — so it doesn’t command me.

Keyboard Maestro makes your computer work for you, not the other way around. It is one of the five best apps I have ever used on my Mac, hell on any device period. It is that good — be warned though, there is a learning curve with this software, but I believe the payoff is well worth the time spent getting to learn it. KM 5 also comes with a library of macros to get new users started.

**** I Use Apple Products Because They Work, It’s That Simple <http://www.loopinsight.com/2011/07/05/i-use-apple-products-because-they-work-its-that-simple/>

**** Alternatives To MobileMe For iWeb Sites <http://tidbits.com/article/12302?rss>
Steve Sande, TidBITS

There are a couple of options, depending on how serious your site is, and whether or not you have a custom domain.

**** Good Riddance, “iSteve” <http://kensegall.com/blog/2011/07/good-riddance-isteve/>
Ken Segall's Observatory

In just five words, that original title managed to be cutesy, gimmicky and arrogant, all at once. It was hardly a fitting choice for a book of importance.

**** Get Your Mac Ready For Lion <http://www.macworld.com/article/160943/2011/07/get_your_mac_ready_for_lion.html#lsrc.rss_main>
Dan Frakes, Macworld

Apple is advertising Lion as the easiest-to-install version of OS X yet, and that may be true. But there are still a few things you can do right now to ensure that your Mac is ready for 10.7 when the update finally arrives.

**** I Love Stars 3.5.3 <http://www.macworld.com/article/160523/2011/07/ilovestars35.html#lsrc.rss_main>
Dan Frakes, Macworld

I Love Stars puts iTunes’ rating scale right in your menu bar. If a track already has a rating, you see that rating without having to switch to iTunes. I Love Stars also supports iTunes’ album ratings; if you’ve rated an album, the album rating is displayed for each track in the album that doesn’t have an individual track rating.

**** Crying All Over My Dress <http://www.bookslut.com/features/2011_07_017821.php>
Elizabeth Bachner, Bookslut

Along the same lines, how do I know that the dead do not feel sorry for their former craving for life? You dream of enjoying a fun party and wake up crying the next morning. You dream of crying sorry tears and wake up to go off hunting… In the same way, there may be a great awakening, after which we shall know that life is actually a great dream. Yet so many people remain ignorant, thinking that they are awake, brightly insisting that they know what is what, assuming one is a leader, the other a servant -- how thick is that!

**** Paths Through The World: Notes On Robert Byron, Patrick Leigh Fermor, And Bruce Chatwin <http://www.bookslut.com/features/2011_07_017860.php>
Greer Mansfield, Bookslut

If this region of twentieth century travel writing could be mapped, you could draw a line linking three of its greatest masters: Robert Byron, Patrick Leigh Fermor, and Bruce Chatwin. It would be anything but a straight line, of course. It would loop back on itself a few times, branch out into quirky arabesques, and gradually reveal odd parallels and symmetries.

**** As Shuttle Era Ends, Dreams Of Space Linger <http://www.nytimes.com/2011/07/05/science/space/05shuttle.html?_r=1&partner=rss&emc=rss>
Dennis Overbye, New York Times

The shuttle was a big deal then. But now, after 30 years of shuttle flights, the last mission ever is being prepped for its launching on Friday. Humans are no closer to the stars than before, and the space program is in tatters.

**** How 10,000 People Keep A Secret <http://www.nytimes.com/2011/07/06/dining/a-pop-up-paris-picnic-is-coming-to-new-york.html?_r=1&partner=rss&emc=rss>
Liesl Schillinger, New York Times

There are picnics, and then there are picnics.

**** Fore! <http://www.newyorker.com/humor/2011/07/04/110704sh_shouts_david>
Larry David, New Yorker

According to Dr. Elisabeth Kübler-Ross’s book “On Death and Dying,” Acceptance was the final stage of grief that terminal patients experience before dying, the others being Anger, Denial, Bargaining, and Depression. I was in the final stage! When I started thinking about it, I realized that I’d gone through every one of those stages, but not as a terminal patient . . . as a golfer.

**** Politicians Pay Tribute To President Nathan: Will She Do The Same? <http://rogerpoh.wordpress.com/2011/07/06/politicians-pay-tribute-to-president-nathan-will-she-do-the-same/>
Spotlight On Singapore

Our ministers, who reward themselves with obscenely high salaries, should hang their heads in shame for having failed the older generation.

**** A “Staunchly Secular” Civil Society? <http://guanyinmiao.wordpress.com/2009/08/22/a-“staunchly-secular”-civil-society/>
Guanyinmiao's Musings

While I agree that people hold on to their religious ideologies and beliefs into civil society, I believe that it is important that the intentions and objectives remain separate from religious ideals and motivations.

**** To Singapore’s PM Lee: Reject Indonesian Corruption Criminals <http://www.thejakartapost.com/news/2011/07/06/to-singapore’s-pm-lee-reject-indonesian-corruption-criminals.html>
Kornelius Purba, The Jakarta Post

What can Singapore do now? I believe PM Lee needs to say loudly to Indonesians: “We will not tolerate the presence of any Indonesian crooks here.” And we will soon realize that we are totally wrong that Singapore is the major obstacle in our fight to eradicate massive corruption.

**** Singapore: It's The Caring, Not The Caning <http://www.businessweek.com/management/singapore-its-the-caring-not-the-caning-07052011.html>
Ron Kaufman, BusinessWeek

Singapore is a maverick. And it has become a beacon of hope in the past few years due to a simple strategy called "service." I’m not talking about niceties like a fake friendly smile or a cheesy tag line that many companies promote as their customer service policy. Instead, Singapore embraces service as an area for constant focus and improvement, with a mindset that digs deep into the fiber of the country.

**** Lady Gaga Bad Romance Rip-off Yanked <http://www.straitstimes.com/BreakingNews/Singapore/Story/STIStory_687700.html>
Jermyn Chow, Straits Times

The National Day Parade (NDP) organisers are in a bit of a fix after they modified the lyrics of a Lady Gaga hit to create a song about the parade's goodie bag.

**** The Straits Times Article That Became Unavailable Online <http://theonlinecitizen.com/2011/07/the-straits-times-article-that-became-unavailable-online/>
Ravi Philemon, The Online Citizen

And it is not too far-fetched to think that those who read the online version will put the blame squarely on the aunt, without considering that it was the system which placed two at-risk children in the care of a vulnerable adult, all because of the philosophy they must adhere to, that the the family “should be the first line of support in our social safety net if the individual needs help”.

**** Atrocious Police Work: Murder Conviction Overturned <http://yawningbread.wordpress.com/2011/07/06/atrocious-police-work-murder-conviction-overturned/>
Au Waipang, Yawning Bread

It’s all very well to say we have neat procedures on paper — though even the fairness of these are disputed as I will come to further down — but when in even such a serious case as murder they are wantonly flouted, it is hard to deny that there exists a widespread culture of impunity and disregard for integrity throughout the police force.

If a man can be so easily convicted and sentenced to hang by a trial court even when the prosecution case looks as sloppy as this, how can any one of us be sure that there aren’t other cases of wrongful conviction?

What is as clear as day by now is that the police and the prosecution do not deserve our trust.

**** Singapore Public Transport <http://www.thedropoutdiaries.com/2011/07/singapore-public-transport/>
The Dropout Diaries

Yes, there’s a lot more hate in my relationship with Singapore public transport.

**** Thai Airways, Tiger And Nok May Face Political Headwinds <http://www.aviationweek.com/aw/generic/story_generic.jsp?channel=aviationdaily&id=news/avd/2011/07/06/05.xml&headline=Thai%20Airways,%20Tiger%20And%20Nok%20May%20Face%20Political%20Headwinds>
Leithen Francis, Aviation Week

The Puea Thai Party’s landslide victory over the royalist-backed Democrat Party is good news for Thai AirAsia and bad news for Thai Airways International and its partner, Tiger Airways. It could also spell trouble for Nok Air, a carrier that has links to the Thai monarchy.

The Star

Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman has denied that sand is being smuggled from the state to Singapore.

**** CASA Sees Tiger Airways As Too Dangerous To Fly For At Least Another Month <http://blogs.crikey.com.au/planetalking/2011/07/06/casa-sees-tiger-airways-as-too-dangerous-to-fly-for-at-least-another-month/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+CrikeyBlogs+%28Crikey+Blogs%29>
Ben Sandilands, Crikey

Singapore Airlines has made some appalling calls in its effort to diversify out of the confines of being a high quality full service carrier, and Tiger is nowhere near to being the calamity that befell its foray into Air New Zealand/Ansett which ended in the return to majority government ownership of the former and the collapse of the latter in 2001.

But Tiger Airways’ mismanagement in Australia tarnishes the reputation of Singapore Airlines, even though it has sold down its stake from 49 per cent to less than 33 per cent.

**** Does The Singapore President Have Any Real Political Power? <http://www.sgpolitics.net/?p=6971>
Ng E-Jay, Sgpolitics.net

As long as the PAP retains a firm grip on power, the Elected Presidency will continue to see its own powers being curtailed and diminished. Only a strong opposition in Parliament can serve as a check against the ruling party.
