**** Bugs & Fixes: Safari Web Content Maladies <http://www.macworld.com/article/161975/2011/08/bugs_fixes_safari_maladies.html#lsrc.rss_main>
Ted Landau, Macworld

If you’re running Safari 5.1, whether under Mac OS X Snow Leopard or Lion, there’s a good chance you’re not altogether pleased with how well it’s running. At least that’s the reaction I hear from many of my colleagues as well as what I see on numerous forum postings. From the myriad of reported Safari 5.1 issues, I’ve chosen to focus here on a pair of related problems.

**** Apple Pulls The Plug On TV Rentals <http://allthingsd.com/20110826/apple-pulls-the-plug-on-tv-rentals/>
Peter Kafka, All Things D

Apple has completely removed customers’ ability to rent shows from iTunes; the remaining options are to buy individual episodes or in some cases a “Season Pass” for a year’s worth of shows.

“iTunes customers have shown they overwhelmingly prefer buying TV shows,” Apple spokesman Tom Neumayr said. “iTunes in the Cloud lets customers download and watch their past TV purchases from their iOS devices, Apple TV, Mac or PC allowing them to enjoy their programming whenever and however they choose.”

**** Mac Lion Blindly Accepts Any LDAP Password <http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/08/26/mac_osx_lion_security_hole/>
Dan Goodin, The Register

People logging in to Macs running OS X 10.7, aka Lion, can access restricted resources using any password they want when the machines use a popular technology known as LDAP for authentication. Short for Lightweight Directory Access Protocol, LDAP servers frequently contain repositories of highly sensitive enterprise data, making them a goldmine to attackers trying to burrow their way in to sensitive networks.

**** A Sort-of Love Story, With Pie Charts <http://www.nytimes.com/2011/08/28/books/review/starting-from-happy-written-and-illustrated-by-patricia-marx-book-review.html?_r=1&partner=rss&emc=rss>
Alexandra Jacobs, New York Times

Anyone who suffers from writer’s block — if only more were afflicted! — will appreciate the raw agony of the creative process laid bare in Patricia Marx’s new novel, “Starting From Happy.” To reach her “target word count,” the constitutionally and often brilliantly economical Marx pads her text with, among other enhancements, pen-and-ink illustrations; pie charts; footnotes; graphological analysis, even of her own signature; a catalog of punctuation; another of pasta shapes; a supposed survey from her publisher; letters from cranky “readers”; and 26 desperate lines of barn-animal noises, recalling Humbert Humbert’s command in “Lolita”: “Repeat till the page is full, printer.”

**** Poems Of Childhood, Grief And Deep Space <http://www.nytimes.com/2011/08/28/books/review/life-on-mars-by-tracy-k-smith-book-review.html?partner=rss&emc=rss>
Joel Brouwer, New York Times

In “Life on Mars,” Smith shows herself to be a poet of extraordinary range and ambition. It’s not easy to be so convincing in both the grand gesture and the reverent contemplation of a humble plate of eggs, and the early successes of this collection far outweigh its later missteps. As all the best poetry does, “Life on Mars” first sends us out into the magnificent chill of the imagination and then returns us to ourselves, both changed and consoled.

Juliana Liu, BBC

For the first time in almost 20 years, voters in Singapore are voting to choose their next president.

His official salary for the largely ceremonial position is among the highest for an elected official, anywhere in the world.

The poll is seen as a test of support for the People's Action Party, which has run Singapore since independence.

**** Blind Singaporeans Voted In Private <http://www.straitstimes.com/The-Big-Story/The-Big-Story-1/Story/STIStory_706567.html>

For the first time ever, blind voters were able to vote for their chosen candidate on their own, without the help of presiding officers at polling stations.

Using a stencil, blind voters could feel where the boxes are and draw a cross in the one that corresponded with the candidate they were voting for.
