But, despite the rise of the internet and all the recent negative attitudes towards travel writing, to predict the death of the genre seems to me as nearsighted as believing that this country's pioneering travel bookshop has come to the end of its useful life.

**** Tony Tan Wins Singapore Presidential Race With Narrow Victory <http://www.businessweek.com/news/2011-08-27/tony-tan-wins-singapore-presidential-race-with-narrow-victory.html>
Shamim Adam, Bloomberg

Singapore’s former Deputy Prime Minister Tony Tan won the island’s presidential election in a recount with a margin of victory of about 0.3 percent.

“The winds of change will still be pushing through and the pressure on the PAP to relook at how it governs the country remains” even after Tony Tan’s win, said Song of CIMB Research Pte in Singapore. “The question is whether the change will be accelerated or gradual.”

This was an intensely fought election, and the result was very close. Dr Tony Tan and Dr Tan Cheng Bock (who had the next highest number of votes) both conveyed strong unifying messages, and declared their intention to work closely with the government. Both have long records of public service – Dr Tony Tan in many roles in government, and Dr Tan Cheng Bock as a highly respected backbench MP. It is reassuring that Singaporean voters recognised and valued their strengths, as well as their inclusive approach.

I have called Dr Tony Tan to congratulate him on his election, and assure him of my government’s full cooperation. I also called Dr Tan Cheng Bock to thank him and his supporters for having fought an effective and dignified campaign.

The ruling party's de-facto candidate in Singapore's presidential election scraped to victory after a dramatic recount on Sunday, in a vote that revealed deep divisions in the wealthy city state.

Prime minister Lee Hsien Loong appealed for national unity after an intense campaign dominated by calls from government critics for a politically independent president who can act as a check on the PAP.

**** Results Decisive, Says Tony Tan <http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/singaporelocalnews/view/1149649/1/.html>
May Wong, Channel NewsAsia

President-elect Tony Tan said the election result has been decisive and he would use the mandate given to meet the expectations of all Singaporeans.

Dr Tan added he would continue to work hard to reach out to all Singaporeans via various platforms such as social media.

**** Tony Tan Lists Urgent Tasks <http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/singaporelocalnews/view/1149664/1/.html>
Imelda Saad, Channel NewsAsia

Singapore's President-elect Tony Tan has said that the most "urgent" task is to reach out to all Singaporeans.

Dr Tan emphasised that the president works for all Singaporeans and he will not be an "ivory tower President", just as President S R Nathan was not.

Lindsay Murdoch, Sydney Morning Herald

The closeness of the vote will ring alarm bells in the People's Action Party that was founded by former prime minister Lee Kuan Yew.

Murray Hiebert, a senior fellow at the Washington-based Centre for Strategic and International Studies' south-east Asia program, said the closely fought race shows Singaporeans are divided between those who wanted to support the candidate most closely associated with the PAP and give the government a vote of confidence and those who wanted a more independent president.

**** Singapore: An Unpopularly Elected President <http://asiancorrespondent.com/63631/singapore-an-unpopularly-elected-president/>
Asian Correspondent

The victory of Dr. Tony Tan, a candidate who still maintains a close relationship with the PAP despite denying any form of affiliation to the PAP, is a case of an unpopularly elected President whose support base is weak. His future efforts to please Singaporeans will either weaken his political clout, or strengthen only his current support base, because Singaporeans have already identified him as a part of the PAP, and bitterly resist the entire domination of the PAP in Singapore’s political scene.
