[R129 SL] R129LIST Digest, Vol 72, Issue 4 re oil pressure

I had the same problem with my 92. The oil pressure sensor was replaced, the oil pressure gauge was replaced and it still was reading too low. My mechanic suggested three things 1. use a thicker viscosity oil (which has helped) 2. replace radiator (don't have the cash at the moment but will do it when I do) 3. check fan clutch(mine was fine). From what I understand it's really not the oil pressure but the engine temp that causes it to read low. On another list I caught hell because my temp gauge would go to 100C. They all said it shouldnt go above 85-90C. Their step one was to replace the fan clutch and radiator. Good luck and keep me posted From: r129list-request at mbcoupes.com

My ;92 500SL exhibits a strange thing. When the outside temperature
is very high and engine coolant temp approaches 100C., the oil pressure drops to
very nearly zero at idle. When engine RPM's are increased, the pressure
immediately increases to an acceptable level (between 2-3 atm). The car
has less than 61,000 miles, has always been properly maintained, and
I change oil at 3000 mile intervals. I use Valvoline 10W-30W
and change oil and filter at 3000 mile intervals. I find it
hard to believe this is normal- does anyone have ideas what's going
on?
