Gail.

There are 5 motors in your seat.
1=for forward and backwards seat
2=for up and down front side of seat
3=for up and down back side of seat
4= for forward and backwards backrest
5=for up and down headrest

50% of the motors from the driver seat are fused with the other 50% of
the passenger seat, so there are 2 fuses , but divided in seats.

If the motor is running one way, it also should running the other way ,
because only the current is reversed.
So if the motors are working in one direction, they are not defect!.

But under your seat is the electronic switchboard with relay's which are
reversing the current.
If the motor is not willing to go the other direction, probably the
contact point of the relay's are corroded by the moister, or the cupper
printed wire is corroded
and doesn't exist anymore.
So take off the seat by loosen the long Philips screws at the front
under the seat , pull them out the sockets and pull the seat forward to
the steer.
Take of the seat and under there you can see the black plastic box
within the electric switches ( relay) .
Make a marking of the connectors and take them off , put out the
electronic board and look at the contact points and the printed circuit.
Clean the printed circuit from moister and corrosion and if necessary
weld the missing wire's with new. Take a sandpaper and clean the
contacts
from the relay.

If everything is ok you can put the pc board back in the cleaned house
and connect the plugs.
Control the fuses in the fuse box under the motor hood and replace, the
best is to replace them all at the same time because your car is old
enough to need it.
It costs only a few box and you will not have electronic problems for
the next years by intermitted fuses.

If there is twice power on the box ( you can measure with bulb or dc
volt ) you can check every relay.
If you put it down with your finger, a motor should react with turning.

After my vacation I can send you drawings about the seats if you send
your e-mail address to j.kuylaars at kpnplanet.nl

Onderwerp: [R129 SL] Left seat motor for my 1991 300SL

I am have a situation with my drivers seat, once it is moved back to fit
my 6' husband, my seat can not be moved up to adjust to my short 5'2".

My husband can remove the bottom portion of drivers seat & work the
right side of the gear to move my seat to fit me. WHAT A PAIN and I
find myself not driving my SL!

Does anyone have any suggestions while I can find a motor--without going
to the dealership? I read some place to tap it with a hammer and it
might start working.

I think my car had gotten pretty wet prior to my 2 month ownership (we
have discovered water coming in around window driver & passenger with
soft top, we think we have gotten windows & doors adjusted....we'll see
when we have our next heavy rain in Bossier City, Louisiana.) Needless
to say, I have found several little quirks with the new love of my life.

Any suggestions and help is greatly appreciated!
