[R129 SL] FIXED - MISS & STALL - ROOF RAMS

Hi Gordon,

If you get stuck, I have an oscilloscope you can use! Phone 0274 830 878 or see you at the next meeting. I do not have the problem (yet) but am going to check the sensors!

Kind Regards, Peter S.

Gordon.

I believe your anti skid light comes on because there are problems with your sensors on the back driving axes.
In the first models they are mounted inside the cardan gear box, what's divide the power to the left and right wheels, so they give normal never problems.
But after I believe model 93 , they mounted the sensors outside the cardan gearbox on the axes left and right.
It is an dish with teeth on the outside, the same as in the front for ABS, and the sensor is mounted 1millimeter ahead from the teethes.
After some years the sensor becomes magnetic, and after a while little iron parts from the brake pads and so on are kept on the sensor.
If there are to many iron parts the sensors starts miscounting and the ABS or the anti Skid lamp go on.
This is a warning that the system cannot work under these conditions.
The sensors are mounted with two Metric 8 mm bolts.
You can turn them loose and take out the sensor.
Clean the sensor with a brush and screw them back.
You can do this for al 4 the wheels, so this issue is for years away.
Or there is a sensor defect, but you can make a measurement with an resistor measure equipment, it should be a few ohms.
If the resistance is some Meg ohms or not to be measured at all, it is properly defect.

When you can measure HZ ( cycle) , it is easy.
Put the wheel from the ground, disconnect the sensor lead and connect it to the cycle measure or oscilloscope.
Then turn the wheel by hand, you must see some Hertz or a swing on the picture what stops if the wheels stops.
Then is the sensor OK.

Greetings from Jan

Jan and all , Congratulations once again. Miss and stall fixed due your advice. LHS engine distribultor had substantial tracking within and poor contacts due condensation. Car goes like a bomb now and feels so much better in all respects.

Now have to address the annoying anti skid light coming on after five minutes but the car is totally useable and no longer a liability.

New Subject: SOFT TOP Hydaulics.

For those who have leaks in their soft top hydraulic rams (either side of trunk). 2 large and four medium rams can be easily dismantled and new seals made up by seal manufacturer. ( I used industrial plastics in Auckland for 130$ NZ total). The two very small rams have very tricky end caps so not really feasible to repair. They cost 224$ NZ Each two years ago thru independent supplier in Auckland. This same supplier can rebuild all rams by sending the lot to Singapore for about 1100$ NZ.

Many Thanks for past assistance.
Cheers

When the roof opens, the main rams are tensioning the roof to 'pop up'. When the little rams let go, there is a bit of noise. I usually have the roof down most of the time, and only put it up a night time when I lock up for the night and I am travelling around NZ. I still drive in rain on the 'open roads' (free ways) as the rain goes over the top (unless you slow below about 65 kph).

The first time I did the automatic top release on my recently acquired SL500, I thought I had broken something as the latches unlocked the top. There were loud thumps. Everything seemed to work fine and the top unlocked properly and rose up uniformly but the "pops" were unnerving. Is this normal? Is some lubrication required? What are owner's experiences? The manual is quiet on this aspect.

I use the Babel translator, it is great but is only useful for conversational English. (It worked in "Life at the End of the Universe" (movie) so it should work reasonably well for us - the Babel (if you were unaware) was a fish you put into your ear to translate from any language in the Universe).

When I translated the first part (Caro Peter), Caro Peter was translated as "Expensive Peter" (should have been Dear Peter). I also said to one of the parents that "her lovely daughter was a credit to her family" it translated as something like "her old maid of a daughter....". We all had a laugh about it (on both sides of the world) but in business it could be a bit embarrassing at times. I still am reminded by the Brazilian families of this Babel program, as we keep in touch regularly via email.
