[R129 SL] Fire Extinguisher

Hi Rudy,
Unsure about the European cars, but it is compulsory for Singapore cars to have a fire extinguisher. Halon [Halon 1200 (Dichlorodifluoromethane) and Halon 1301(Bromotrifluoromethane)] can only be used in restricted sites such as aircraft and military applications in the US, Pacific and Europe as it is an ozone depleting gas (another one). So most fire extinguishers in vehicles are dry powder (also known as dry chemical). beware using dry powder and breathing in the 'dust' if you have any bronchial or asthmatic problems. The powder contains all sorts of stuff including "muscovite mica". If you have respiratory problems, and if you breathe in the 'dust' there is a high chance you will end up in hospital!! (still, the fire should be out, so that is one consolation)

Incidentally, New Zealand has a law (I think it is the "Ozone Layer Protection Act of 1996) that states it is illegal to use or maintain Halon extinguishers or extinguishing equipment. Many other countries have similar laws and I know Aussie has the same Act enforcing the same issue.

The Singapore R129 Cars' extinguishers and brackets are located directly in front of the passengers seat and are attached to the seat base so that you can still use the electric seats with ease. I am unsure of whether they are an MB product or are aftermarket! I have seen the odd extinguisher on the outer side panel of the car so it is positioned so the passenger can scratch their legs on - nuisance value! Hope this helps.

Regards, Peter S.

Hello,

I believe in Europe MB offers an optional Halon fire extinguisher, mounted to the front edge of drivers or passenger's seat. The local MB dealer has no knowledge of this but will order it if I could supply a part number. Does anybody have any info on this? Are there existing mounts or holes on the seat pan?

Thanks,
Rudy
