[R129 SL] Electrical problems

Thanks Paul. Yeah, there a lot of these cars in So. Cal. It's funny though, as you go around the rest of the country and you rarely see one!
I always thought our own SL club in So. Cal would be fun!

Cheers,

Greg

That's at least 3 of us in So.Cal. We should do a rally or something.

Meanwhile, I have the exact prob w/ my turn signal stalk. My indie, whose judgment I trust, says it's a replacement-only issue which is quite expensive. Recommendation was to live with it. I'm not having the A/C issue at all.

Speaking of intermittent electrical problems, I have one as well I would like to see if anyone has a fix. When using the A/C, the blowers go from the front vents of the dash to the top vents (and seems to stay stuck there), back and forth, and the panel buttons do very little to stop it. Like Bob in San Diego, my car never sees rain (I live in Chatsworth, CA), but it's darn hot here sometimes so A/C is a must!

Thanks to all!

Rich,

I have a similar problem on a very intermittent basis with my ’92 as well. When I signal for a left turn the warning lights will all flash on for a second. This doesn’t happen very often but is always disconcerting. I have not experienced the cruise control or wiper issue, but I rarely drive this car in the rain (Doesn’t rain much in San Diego, Ca.). I will be interested to hear if anyone else has had a similar problem and has a fix.

Bob

On a recent long hiway trip, the '92 500SL was exposed to one of its rare rain experiences during which I discovered some annoying problems. Wiper switch was intermittent, with the low-speed and interval wiper settings working only occasionally (mostly not at all). Fortunately, the high speed wiper position was OK so I was able to drive safely. Also, when signalling lane changes, the cruise control would act up, sometimes shutting off, other times speeding up as when the cruise lever is moved to the "Accelerate/Set" position. When this happened, the warning lights on the instrument panel would go crazy so I felt like I was playing a pinball machine- different colored lights flashing everywhere, fuel gauge instantly dropping to zero, red oil pressure light and seat belt light flickering, etc.! This anomaly was seen whether the wipers were on or not. I suspect the combi switch is the culprit, although maybe there is a wiring harness in the steering column that is at fault. My question is can the combi switch be taken apart so electrical contacts can be cleaned? Failing that, is replacement of the combi switch likely to solve these problems? My concern is the cruise control problem that shows up when signalling lane changes- it would seem that the combi switch functions and the cruise control would be two separate systems.
Rich
