[R129 SL] Master Vehicle Inquery (VMI) list

Two years ago, when I bought my current 1996 SL500, the MB dealer, who I had called to obtain a new key for the car, offered to download the VMI list on the vehicle for me.  What he sent to me was the complete service history on my vehicle from day one to the present for each time the vehicle had been to MB anywhere for service.  It also showed me the original factory order number, vin#, engine#, last service mileage, radio code, selling dealer #, and it consisted of 5 full pages of useful information about the car.

So when my friend purchased a 1992 500SL I showed him my VMI download and suggested he ask MB for one on his car.  Every dealer he has talked to has told him that information is no longer available to owners.  Does anybody know why MB has changed it's policy on this?
