Soft top problem:
First control if the windows are going down.
Are the windows going down with the windows switches?
If not, the soft top cannot work.
Replace the fuses from the windows or repair the defect.

If the windows are normal working with their own switches, but they are not
going down with the softtop switch,
it is proberly the main control switch or the fuses or the control computer
ore wiring from the soft top.
If the windows going down it is important that the switches under the
windows are working, if the switches are not working the windows going down
and then the procedure from the softtop is halted.

So repair the switches under the windows in the doors.

Also there is a possibilty that ther is no oil in the resevoir for the
softtop under the sparewheel in the trunk.
Check before all !

Also a good remedy for cars from that age is to change ALL FUSES FOR NEW.
It cost only a few box and solve 50% off the problems.
Sometimes you cannot see that the fuse is broken during age and vibrations
ore has a high resistance.
We always look for burnout fuses!

good luck.
If neccesary i have the control list for all the switches from the softtop.

Gentlemen

I am presently considering buying an SL (Ipresently have an SEC) and was
wondering if there is any particular model I should have a preference for
and if there were any major changes to spec. that would make a certain year
more preferable?.
Also I will be looking in the UK so are there any potential problems that
need looking out for.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Many thanks

Patrick

Patrick - you definitely need an R129 500SL of 1990 which was the second
year of their production. Later models were strangled and MB were losing
quality but the first years saw 325 bhp and all the extras you could
possibly wish for as standard - memory seats/mirrors (3), cruise
control, leather, hard/soft top, automatic, a/c etc. etc., - hell, they
cost about EUR 90,000 new !!!

By chance, I happen to have one for sale. Burnt silver (a light metallic
beige) with tobacco brown leather seats and a dark brown hood. It has
the child seats and adaptive suspension options plus the original necker
Mexico 2000 and a Silversone Becker 10 CD player in the boot. It's LHD
and only 160K km with full MB service and EUR 4K spent in the last 3
years. Yours for EUR15,000 - a steal.

I agree. This is the best one to go for. I have a 1990 500SL in light
metalic blue which has only completed 55000 miles from new. It is a great
car and is not tied down with lots of unreliable computer controls. You
couldn't buy mine for 15000 euros or anything close.
Good luck with your search and if you want any specific advice from an
enthusiastic owner feel free to e-mail me.
Regards Chris.

Many thanks for your help with this. Are there any particular problems to
look out for eg rust in certain areas, electronics etc.

George, I am based in the UK and would prefer a right hand drive, but thanks
for the offer.

thanks again

Have to agree with all the writings here - I have a 1991 500SL with 42K
miles (triple black) and the car is a dream to drive, and has everything you
could possibly want in a car. The build quality is incredible, it's fast,
comfortable for long trips, and still an eye-catcher even here in car-crazy
Los Angeles, California. You see a lot of them for sale here, but usually
high-mileage cars. That one George has seems like a steal.

Cheers to all,

Greg

I just recently purchased a 1990 500 SL; the soft top won't come out of
its compartment b/c the cover won't open. In playing around with it
for a couple of hours with my mechanic, we came to the conclusion
(hopeful guess, really) that the switch was only operating to close the
compartment whether we pushed forward or back. So, I've bought a
replacement switch to install.

Can anyone give advice on removal of the console for this installation?
Any other advice/suggestions very much appreciated.

Paul

With this car you need INFO. Go to _www.alldatadiy.com_
(http://www.alldatadiy.com) and sign up for the service. $14.95 per year.
Great deal. All the
info you can want and I doubt it is the switch. Read the manual carefully.
There are numerous micro switches that have to work for this automatic top
to work.

I have a bulb warning light on in my 1998 SL500 (43,000 miles), all bulbs
seem to be working, after a period (say half an hour to an hour) it usually
goes out. Anyone

I just had this on my car.

You check the lamps and THINK they are all working. but

For me it was ONE of the two rear license plate lamps that was out.

Easy to overlook without paying close attention.
