Why plastic tubes? Is it the heat that casues the tubes to get brittle? Is there a fix for this other than going to the dealer?

FYI : this happpened at 70-K to a
PAMPERED '95 SL -500 that has
been on Mobil-1 from the day it
was born with oil changed every
4-K.
