> Becky, I am not as familiar with the 300 engine as I am with my 500 but
there is a bottom engine cover which has to be removed before you can dump
the old oil. That bottom cover has three screws holding it up and these can
easily be removed. You will also want to lube the suspension points under
the car when you do the oil drain. On my SL500 the oil filter (which I
change each time I change the oil) is of a cartridge type which is located
on the right side of the motor and the cartridge is removed and replaced
from above taking care not to damage the seal between the filter holder and
the cover. I use Mobil 1 synthetic 5 w 30 and have found a Nissan dealer
near my home who, as long as I furnish the oil and the filter, will do the
oil change, new filter, and lube the fittings for $9.95. It is well worth
that to me just to get rid of the old oil.

I regularly change the oill on both my SL320 and E300 using the same system
that I believe the dealers use. That is: leave the oil plug in the
crankcase alone. Instead use a either a vacuum unit or an extractor pump
(12Volt attach to the battery) and evacuate the crankcase through the
dipstick tube. The cost of the pump is about $120 and the vacuum extractor
is about $50. For me the pump works better. It sits on a container and it
is convenient in that it runs in both direction - i.e after the container is
full one can pump it into a second container (like an old paint bucket) and
take it to the nearest recycle place. I have tested this method against
using the drain plug and the dipstick method empties the crankcase at least
as well as using the drainplug. The major advantages are that you do not
have to crawl unser the car, you do not hava to remove the panel under the
engine, you will never cross-thread a drainplug and you and your garage
floor stay clean.
