I had a similar problem on my 91 500 SL.Took several mechanics to figure it 
out, but the dealer finally found it was the spark plug suppressors. Farily 
inexpensive fix.  Hope that helps.

Hi Bill;
While you give the age of your car, you did not give the mileaes on the
engine, which would be a help in guessing the problem.

The first thing (and least expensive thing) would be to make sure the fuel
is fresh and perhaps drain the old fuel and refill, adding a bottle of
Techron.  Then DRIVE THE CAR at highway speeds for a while.

If that doesn't cure the problem, THEN I would look into replacing the fuel
filter or go deeper into the problem.
