I did that on a 95 SL I once owned.  It was easy, but I don't remember exactly.  I think there are some small screws that hold the door hinge in place. They have to be removed to get clearance. Then carefully pry the phone out.  I taped the connectors and then pushed the wires behind the enclosure to get additional space.
Then I also removed the unit from the console.
