I have the "fused" knob (1992 500SL) and had to return one of those
Canadian wood ones you're talking about. If you figure out how to
accomodate the burlwood one please share with the list!

    Finally!

Thanks. That was the info I was looking for. I'll report back with what
paint or other technique I use. I had a similar mess on the
vanity mirror covers in the sun shades. I used Goo Gone (lots of it, and
carefully) to remove the gick (and the air bag warnings).
They are now a nice Parchment color, and no longer collecting bugs when
I drive with the top down.
I believe that Goo Gone will render the map light cover Black when
finished.

Evenutally, though I'll probably spring for the Burlwood cover. The
source that I sent the link for is Performance Products.

Stay tuned on the shifter replacement. Early ones use a fused on knob,
which will NOT screw off for replacements. I may
have a source for shift levers. I'm testing one out this weekend, and I
have already gotten a real nice knob from Canada.

I had the same problem with my 1991 300SL. I takes about 15 to 20
minutes to remove the cover and I just repainted the existing cover with
some spray paint I got at and auto parts store that matched the interior
(sort of).
The toughest part about pulling the cover is to remove the rear view
mirror. It just pulls down (hard) to disengage from the retainer. Then push
the 2 light holders up (from the side) into the assembly and you can remove
the covers and bulbs. There are 2 screws (one in each light well) that
unscrew to remove the cover.
Be careful, because there are wiring harnesses that need to be
unplugged from the mirror and the assembly. Once removed, the assembly has
electronics and sensors inside.
For more details on this process, I got a subscription to AlldataDIY
for the manual for my car. If you go to their website, www.alldatadiy.co,
you can subscribe for 1 years use of their technical data for about $28.
It contains almost all the repair manual data for the car and you can print
out what you need.

        Mr. Sadler

I guess I did not get your previous messages in reference to the
Map Light Assembly. Who was it that you contacted and stated that they were
on back order.
Also, YES YES I am very interested in joining in with others who may
like to order the burlwood cover. I went to the link you provided and I am
so hooked!!!! I also want to change the steering wheel and shift knob.
Dreams Dreams I have Dreams..... Hopefully we would get a discount. As I
have stated before my Map light is only working on one side as well as one
of the switches has fell off and it has that sticky feel to the outside and
the paint seems to be coming off. I can not take my top off with that
crazy look. (smile) I want to fix it and I went to the Mercedes Dealer in
my area (NC) and the price to replace it was almost 400.00 wow!!! Any
Ideas. Maybe a used one or maybe I can get this one fixed and just cover it
with the Wood finish which is what I am shooting for. Is there anyone out
there who can help??

just talked to them. These are on backorder until the end of June
at the earliest, so don't pull the old one off yet.
I am being told conflicting info on how easy/hard it is to remove
this surround.
Any mechanics on this list with an opinion?

            OK,
if you want to replace it, there is a source for a burlwood
cover at performance products. If you put in 500sl, it will not come up
though.
I have asked them for installation instructions on this, to see
just how involved this is going to get.
Here's the link for the burlwood version.

http://www.performanceproducts.com/ProductPage.aspx?ProductName=Overhead+Map
+Light+Cover+(W129)&productid=109275&producttype=20

If we have enough interest, perhaps we can get a quantity
discount with a single order.

Hey Guys I have the same problem!!!!! The paint, or outer
layer of plastic is horrible!! I also have what seems to be a short. I
guess I must replace the whole assembly. I even thought of covering it with
some factory matched burrolwood. Any Ideas???

              Cliff Sadler <sadler@comcast.net> wrote:

                The map lights work fine.

I have noticed that the paint, or outer layer of plastic is
real soft,
I thought that maybe this was due to someone trying to clean
it
with a chemical that softened the paint. Others have said
that
it is a reaction to exposure to the sun, or heat. Either
way, it has to
come off, and get refinished, or replaced.

So, how do I remove this shell, so that I can do something
with it?
I have found the 2 screws under the map lamp assemblies, but
there
are more holding that unit under the windshield frame that I
cannot find.
Do I have to remove the rear view mirror as well?

                TIA.
