MessageAnd I'm the one that got caught between him finding out there were
"exceptions" and putting the disclaimer up.  His source for replacement
shift levers is way too expensive.

  I'd be interested in seeing the description and sources.  I'm the reason
for the eBay "disclaimer" - bought one of these for my 92 and discovered it
was not a clean replacement :-)

    Finally had the time and the tools to do the "fused" shift knob change.
    Wasn't as hard as I thought, but it is not for the faint of heart.
Detailed
    description, and sources coming later today.

    short version:

    There's a knob on Ebay that's pretty nice out of Canada, but has a
disclaimer.
    If you have a "fused" shift knob (pre 1994 in 500SLs) then you'll have
to
    perform open console surgery to remove the old one, and you'll have to
    replace the shift lever.

    I have figured out how to do the whole thing for less than 120.00 if you
    do the work yourself.
