Finally had the time and the tools to do the "fused" shift knob change.
Wasn't as hard as I thought, but it is not for the faint of heart. =

There's a knob on Ebay that's pretty nice out of Canada, but has a
disclaimer.
If you have a "fused" shift knob (pre 1994 in 500SLs) then you'll have =
to
perform open console surgery to remove the old one, and you'll have to
replace the shift lever.=20

I have figured out how to do the whole thing for less than 120.00 if you
do the work yourself.
