Similar things also happen when the microprocessor is offline and the car is
on manual control. I had the same symptoms.
Does the check engine light come on? If it doesnot then the case might be
true. Mine was fixed with a just a change
of fuse in the protection circuit.

I own a 1992 500sl and am very happy with the car. It is developing a
problem with starting. Intermittently it will not start. Dash lights come on
and motor cranks but does not fire. When it won't start I remove the key and
wait for the five beeps then try again. Sometimes it starts on the second
try but there are times that procedure has to be repeated five times. Anyone
have any ideas? One other small problem is that I get no air flow from
right side dash vent.
