For the starting problem, i think it is a problem with most of the early
90's 500SL's...... you probably need to change the distributor cap and
rotor.
 
The problem with the air vent is one of 2 things, either the motor/flap
that opens & closes the airflow to the vent is stuck or needs
replacement.......... or the actual "pipe" that carries air to that vent
has been disconnected (maybe when the dash was opened up for repairs or
something.

I own a 1992 500sl and am very happy with the car. It is developing a
problem with starting. Intermittently it will not start. Dash lights
come on and motor cranks but does not fire. When it won't start I remove
the key and wait for the five beeps then try again. Sometimes it starts
on the second try but there are times that procedure has to be repeated
five times. Anyone have any ideas?  One other small problem is that I
get no air flow from right side dash vent.
