[LargeFormat] to ringlash or not to ringflash

Any flashgun might work. You could try a cheap adapter, hot-flash to cable,
assuming your shutters have the conventional little flash socket. If your
flashgun is TTL this feature won't work. Use it on conventional automatic at
say f11 if this is your working aperture in large-format. The guide number
for the flashgun (guess it's 25 in metres at 100 *ISO) - at f11 this gives a
working distance just over 2 metres. If the result is underexposed your
guide number is less than 25. I use oldfashioned large flashes with their
own built-in sensor which work well if you are within range but my LF lenses
are all dim and I need to work close. This is why I am playing with
flashbulbs at present. No automatic exposure control but quite a lot of
light. Nothing shorter than 1/25 or you lose light. I am currently worrying
whether a bulb flash will damage a modern SLR when the shutter triggers the
flash. All comments welcome on this. Philip
