Clive -- It turns out that the problem crops up only when I'm using the
roll-film carriers. These have a dip in the profile to allow excess film
to stick out the sides; it also lets out massive amounts of light. When I
switched over to using a 5x7 carrier with the glass replaced by metal
plates with cutouts for the image area, the problem disappeared. Whew!
Those felt traps really do work well.

Yeah, it's a CLS301 head, but I don't think that's part of the issue. The
leak happens at the carrier, and apart from making little baffles, there's
not much I can do about it if I use those roll-film carriers. Happily, I
have two "regular" carriers, with full-coverage upper and lower felt traps.
I really have to get some sort of inexpensive digital beast for taking
quick snaps. It would make explaining these techie things *so* much
easier; waving one's hands about doesn't really cut it in an ASCII-only
conversation ...
On the brighter side, all the problems are fixed with my big darkroom sink,
so I'm operational at long, long last, and this Friday a friend will be
lending me a 135mm enlarging lens. I can't tell you how much I'm looking
forward to finally projecting some large format stuff onto the baseboard!
Cheers,
