hope you don't get this twice but seems my post from my gmail did not go through. I have a local feed mill that makes a ground feed so I use that for my 2 old sheep, Jacob ewe included, that don't have teeth. I also have found that Chaffhaye is moist and tender enough for them to actually eat. It is bagged and is a hay replacement. I also soak beet pulp and add to the feed or just give them a bucket full. and they do well on the grass when it is out. I will most likely cut out the grain once the grass comes in. My old Jacob ewe seems to stay on the thin side but she is very active.

>> My older ewes were never skinny . I think it?s because I grained them often. Children came and they knew children meant treats. Fine cracked corn with molasses sweet feed mix seemed to work . Of course I wormed them with Diatamacious Earth food grade . You have to buy it on line , Lowes brand has additives you don?t want for animals. It also helps kill those pesky bugs you get in grain in the south. I knew elderly who could eat anything we think we need teeth for. Add hot water to it to make a mash if you are seeing whole grain come through in their stool or you?re still worried. They also appreciated a heat lamp in the cold. Hope this helps> Katherine

That being said, I think that fresh green grass is the best thing for them ? they seem to manage to get it, even without the front choppers. Our grain mix has soy meal in it, and they can readily handle that, although I?m not sure it makes too much difference. Mostly, not having to compete with a lot of other ewes at the feeder helps some ? although even given free choice grain in a pen of ?grannies? one year, my old girls were still skinny.
