Here's a email from my friend about her dog.  She's started a blog (with photos)
to try to get help identifying the cause.  Please feel free to forward on.

Thanks

Subject: [ILLWISSARDogs] Mysterious Dog Ailment

Hi,
I need help! My search dog Quinto came up with a mysterious condition in
August, which has many top veterinarians baffled. It started with necrotic
tissue along his gum (with no associated periodontal problems, no mechanism
of injury, or chemical/electric burn marks). Since then he has had three
surgeries for necrotic tissue in his mouth (with mild bone infection). In
the last surgery on Jan 1, a large piece of jaw and teeth was removed. A
fourth return could be a mortality level event.

Everything imaginable has been ruled out, from cancer to immune
deficiencies, fungals and dental problems. He is the epitome of health and
fitness otherwise. He is a young (21 months now), intact German shorthair
pointer. The biopsies are completely unremarkable. The surgeries to debride
the area were done well and healed wonderfully., and then the necrotic
tissue suddenly returns at an incredibly fast rate (5 - 10 mm every 8
hours).

Among the unusual exposure factors is that he lives/interacts with alpacas,
and through my farm has had the opportunity to kill muskrats, snakes, toads,
birds, and rodents of every type. He has also traveled and trained
extensively in Illinois & Wisconsin, as far south as Arkansas, and as far
east as Rhode Island. He is also a German import, so he may have different
maternal antibodies than his American counterparts.

I have a blog with lots of details, photos, xrays, biopsy reports etc. If
you have ideas or the inclination, please visit www.snowpan.info/Quinn .
Feel free to share this information with others who may have ideas. I'm
desperate.

Not only is he my much loved pet, but he is a highly trained search and
rescue dog with ILL-WIS Search Dogs ( www.sardog.com ), who performs a
valuable community service.

Thank you so much!

Jenni Bidner
