I agree that the "posturing" aimed at the ram could be construed as a
challenge. I also don't tolerate aggressive rams- but boys will be boys- so
when I go into the pens/paddocks/pastures, I go with one of my English
Shepherds. Generally, just their presence is enough to deter the boys from
considering a challenge. But if they do get too close to my "RFZ" (ram free
zone), the dogs are quick to jump in and "encourage" the ram to move away. They
only use as much force as is needed. Once the rams back off, the dogs stand
down.
I also always have rakes or long poles positioned around the paddock fencing
just in case I need to use the "2x4" method of reasoning.... ;)
