[Jacob-list] certified scrapie free

I guess I'm unsure, then, exactly how scrapie is transmitted. Guess I'll have to do some reading! Females can't get it from males? Nor do I understand how having a closed flock means it's scrapie-free, just because it's closed? Obviously, I'm deficient in the scrapie-understanding-department. FRED????

A woman with Shetlands has a scrapie free flock - she says - and it means she has a CLOSED flock of females. She can sell any sheep and she can bring in rams to breed but cannot add any more females or her date will get reset - she says.

Laura, Cheryl, et al,

If the only way you can tell if a sheep has scrapie is through examing its brain when it's dead, how can a flock be certified scrapie free? I'm just curious as to the process. I know that the mandatory scrapie program simply has people record who got sold to whom and keep records, in case, when randomly checking for scrapie, they come across a sheep that has it and can then, track it back. But I'm not entirely sure how the voluntary program works in such a way that it can certify a flock scrapie-free? All explanations welcome.
