Although you can certainly learn anything on your own, I agree that having
an experienced spinner coax you through both the initial learning and
choosing a wheel might help you avoid frustration. It's hard to know what
features you prefer (like single or double treadle, double-drive or Scotch
tension) without some experience. It sounds as though there are some
spinning guilds near enough that you could take advantage of, to find a
class or at least view/try some different wheels. Everyone on the list has
their favorite wheel, and most of us probably have limited experience with
the range of wheels out there. I learned on an Ashford traditional over 30
years ago, and I like the simplicity and efficiency of that wheel, and
it's one of the least expensive ones. I now have a Schacht Matchless, and
an Ashford Joy for traveling, and love them both. However, I was taught to
use a spindle first, as it gives you a sense of the basics of spinning
(like learning to sail a small boat before commanding a yacht). You might
consider starting with an inexpensive, simple tool -the drop spindle- to
"get the hang of it" (no pun intended). I would be cautious about buying
over e-Bay; sellers aren't always aware of what is working/not
working/missing on a wheel.

Good luck, and let us know what you decide!
