[Jacob-list] Foot injury

I would also question why the feet were being trimmed. The accident may have happened while trimming a foot that (like most Jacobs) did not have excessive growth. Is the shearer used to trimming all sheep whether they need them or not? ...are the feet growing out more than they should because of soft ground, over feeding, or injuries?

Any other advice (other than find a different person to shear)?

NICK -- UNLESS THE SHEARER DID THIS "ON PURPOSE", YOU MIGHT RECONSIDER FIRING HIM/HER. I MEAN UNLESS THAT PERSON IS JUST TOTALLY IRRESPONSIBLE AND DID NOT DO A GOOD SHEARING FOR YOUR FLOCK, WHY TOSS THEM? IN OUR AREA AT ELAST, IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO LOCATE A GOOD SHEARER. WE HAVE BEEN FORTUNATE TO HAVE HAD THE SAME ONE COME FAITHFULLY FOR THE PAST 8 YEARS.

HOW MANY TIMES DO WE, AS SHEPHERDS AND SHEPHERDESS', MAKE MISTAKES WITHIN OUR FLOCK AND THEY STILL SURVIVE -- SUCH IS THE HUMAN ELEMENT IN THINGS, IS IT NOT? I HAVE TRIMMED MY FLOCK HOOVES AND CUT A MY SHARE, ONE OR TWO PRETTY BADLY BUT THEY DID SURVIVE AND WERE NOT PERMANENTLY DAMAGED OR DISFIGURED IN ANY WAY. I'VE HAD MY SHEARER CUT ON OF MY SHEEP WHILE SHEARING -- ONE THAT REQUIRED STITCHES AND YES, IN FRONT OF A GROUP OF HOME SCHOOLERS.

THE KIDS WILL BE FINE -- CHILDREN ARE QUITE RESILENT INDEED AND MORESO THAN WE ADULTS GIVE THEM CREDIT FOR. IN MY CASE, THE ONLY THING "HURT" THAT DAY WAS MY PRIDE, WHICH I SHOULD NOT HAVE HAD ANYWAY. I WAS EMBARRASSED TO SAY THE LEAST BUT EMBARRASMENT IS SIMPLY "PRIDE EXPOSED".

ALL I CAN SAY IS IT'S A GOOD THING NO ONE "FIRED" ME FOR BEING HUMAN AND MAKING MISTAKES ALONG THE WAY. OTHERWISE I WOULD NEVER HAVE MADE IT OUT OF GRAMMAR SCHOOL -- LOL

HOPE YOUR SHEEP HEALS RAPIDLY! THANK GOODNESS THESE JACOBS ARE SO "FORGIVING", HUH? :)

CHERYL

We had our flock sheared on Saturday. The shearer also trimmed hooves and somehow managed to take 3/8 inch off the toe of our favorite ewe, releasing a torrent of blood that sprayed at least 18 inches to the horror of an assembled group of children (including my 5 year old daughter and 3 year old son). It was obviously an artery based on the pressure and color of the blood. She probably lost 50 cc's before we got the bleeding under control. Applied antibiotic ointment, wrapped the foot with blood stop powder and gave her some penicillin. Amazingly, she was up and about the entire time, not lame. Put her in one of my horse stalls on a deep bed of shavings. Today she seemed fine, eating well. Changed the dressing, bleeding stopped and wound looks clean. My question is: does anyone have experience with this type of injury? How long should I keep the foot wrapped? How long should I keep her in a stall (she is with her yearling daughter)? Any other advice (other than find a different person to shear)?

Thanks.
